“Labour Party was right and you should have just voted for them” says British PM Liz Truss

« Voters overwhelmingly believe American democracy is under threat, but seem remarkably apathetic about that danger, with few calling it the nation’s most pressing problem, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll. »

new york times today:
- fed wants to raise interest rates again to curb spending, because inflation
- retailers really want people to spend money this holiday season, because inflation

this is probably still far too many and i would be better off if i just stuck to like, six or eight, but:

1) oftentimes the mons i like the most take a while to get to, so it’s good to have others until you get to that point

2) there are over a thousand pokémon so if i only used six i would simply not be able to use a great many of them

3) i would have a very hard time deciding on six without using a bunch of them and seeing which i like the vibes of the best

these days when i play pokémon i have to keep a running note of all the pokémon i will use and what movesets i’m planning for them because i’ve decided to limit myself to 30 per save

did illumination take all their cues not from the original super mario bros but from ubisoft mario rabbids

it would be more accurate to say language determines aesthetics

Show thread

“language determines cognition”

what they think it means:
- if you don't have a word for green you don't know what colour grass is

what it actually means:
- if your language is SVO you will prefer pictures which place the agent of the action first, the instrument of the action in the middle, and the target of the action at the end
- “first”, “middle”, and “end” are determined by the writing direction of your written language if you have one
- if you don't have a word for green you can just say “the colour of grass”

and humans being humans decided they would rather live a life with really sick guitar riffs in it

Show thread

nature was like you can all be healthy, happy, and productive, OR some of you can learn some really sick guitar riffs

Show thread

what makes humans different from every other species on the planet is that some of them grow up to be welbalanced individuals, but the species is actually designed for a significant portion to instead grow up to be absolute sickos

being good at writing also means being able to appreciate to a greater extent the beauty in various turns of phrase so it's not all bad

but you don't get good without hijacking your brain’s pattern-matching to constantly notice flaws in text and identify discrepancies between stated and intended meaning

noticing these things doesn’t make you a bad person but it does inevitably lead you down the path of being kind of an asshole

Show thread

every time anyone says anything you are reminded that the world is a flawed, imperfect place and that things could be better

Show thread

there are a ton of takes like “why are great writers all assholes?” as though there were something about being an asshole which makes you a great writer, but i think it’s actually the opposite and being good at writing is what makes you into an asshole

everyone complains about how quickly people play contemporary games, move on, and forget about them in an endless churn; if only there was a game mechanic which required people to take their time with things and spread it out across multiple sittings

Show thread

my current controversial games take is that grinding is good actually
