you can't subscribe to #Kabedon fic on AO3 because they are cowards
@coriander but yeah the vibes definitely hit different with “fuck yeah let's kill the fascists” versus the Marshall Plan and everything which followed after
@coriander we didn't even have an official national anthem until WWII apparently
@coriander WWI for baseball; WWII for football and other sports; NFL players weren't required to be on the field for it until 2009
@aescling @wallhackio cat we have ![]()

unironically asking for a friend, please boost
@Stevarow i can recommend a fanfic https://archiveofourown.org/works/7149080
my take is that if gender truly means nothing to your friend, they are agender, not genderfluid, but in practice the former often is a survival technique masking something much more complicated
the fundamental question is whether gender means nothing to you because you don't have a gender, or because you are too dissociated from your sense of self/identity to say what it is. in the former case there's no action required; the latter case might call for radical change

#Fandom #Introductions #FandomFriendingMeme
1. How long have you been in fandom?
I’ve been a fan (as in, wrote fanfiction) since circa 2007 but only “in fandom” (as in, communicating with other fans) since 2016 or thereabouts.
2. Which fandoms are you in now?
Typically I identify myself as belonging to “Nintendo fandom” as I have fannish opinions across most #Nintendo franchises and am amenable to crossovers. I actively contribute to #Zelda and #Pokémon, and very occasionally #SmashBros and #FireEmblem.
I’m also very interested in zhiguai and chuanqi, but it’s rare to find people interacting with those stories as fans, as opposed to non-fannish adaptation or academic study.
3. Do you create transformative works (fic, fan art, podfic, etc.)?
Fic primarily, maybe one day some meta/shrines.
4. What was your first fandom?
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is the first thing I approached from a decidedly fannish perspective.
5. How often has fic made you cry?
Almost never; most fic is situational drama and if you want to make me cry you need something a little more permanent.
6. Rec a fic that you love!
Make a Wish, Make it Count by LiliansMalice. Probably the best dark fantasy story I’ve read. <https://archiveofourown.org/works/14864093/chapters/34414643>
7. Who's your ult OTP?
Original Pokémon Trainer/Original Pokémon Trainer
8. Share a pic that would convince someone to fall for your current fandom!
https://at.tumblr.com/kibigo/a-true-lesbian-classic/fydho6ervaxy
9. Have you ever met a fandom friend IRL?
Bold of you to suggest I have fandom friends!
10. What's the last fandom merch or craft you got?
As in something produced by fans? I don’t think the Chainmail Bikini zine is technically in communion but I think it has similar vibes. <http://chainmail-bikini.com>
I don’t really express myself through material culture much so purchasing fannish artefacts is pretty rare for me.
11. Rare pairs, big ships, or gen?
Anything so long as it’s interesting, although if you are writing a big ship and don’t orient yourself critically towards the existing body of work I am liable to get bored.
12. Are you multi-fandom or mono-fannish?
See response to №2, above.
I’ll read fic from fandoms I’m not into if I’m doing research or it comes with a strong recommendation from a friend.
13. When did you last travel for a con, concert, fanmeet, or cupsleeve event?
Never! I don’t leave the house lmao.
14. How did you get into your current fandom?
Writing stories with nerdy friends in class in middle school.
15. What's your favourite trope?
People who are meant to inherit privilege developing solidarity with the wrong (read: correct) people and abandoning The System as a result.
There isn’t a fancy trope title for this and I explicitly do NOT mean a redemption narrative; cf. Vel Sartha in Andor for a contemporary popular example.
16. What are 3 tags that will make you click no matter what?
“no matter what” is a bit of an exaggeration but I’m tempted to click on fics with:
• Religion meta, although I’m usually dissatisfied with it
• Crossdressing, provided there isn’t anything to suggest it is virulently transphobic or whatever
• Lesbian sex (provided it isn’t boringly straight) let’s be real
17. Fav fest you've prompted/read/written for?
Bold of you to suggest my fandom is so organized!
18. Share an upcoming fest you're excited about!
See №17.
19. What's your favourite episode, song, moment, etc. from your current fandom?
In The Princess Who Carries the Blood of the Goddess <https://archiveofourown.org/works/15049127> when the author makes an almost direct comparison between the protagonists fighting to address a growing apocalypse after generations of failure and young climate justice activists in the real world.
Or did you mean in canon? There is nothing of value there lmao.
20. Tag three fandom friends on Masto!

@Satsuma “20 minutes to kill”
programming
@alyssa i agree
@essentialrandom @gaditb @Satsuma IPTC *does* have an alternate text field so that might be the place to start
@essentialrandom @gaditb @Satsuma as an aside, i love it when the answer to a technical question is “yeah there’s a whole ecosystem of programmer folks who have experience in this subject area, they just don’t ever talk to the people writing web apps” lol
i mean this sincerely; programming is a way bigger landscape than the view from the web and i love catching glimpses of other lands
@essentialrandom @gaditb @Satsuma https://github.com/nitmws/get-iptc-pmd (linked from the exiftool page) may be a helpful toy?
@essentialrandom do you mean OCR or extract embedded text in the image headers
(if the former, i think open-source OCR is kind of bulky and unreliable but web APIs for interacting with browser- or operating system-provided OCR may be coming!)
(if the latter, yes i believe it's just a matter of undoing the compression and reading the correct image headers, both of which should be pretty fast operations especially in WASM. if the headers are at the beginning of the image you could potentially do it while the rest was still downloading.)
@Satsuma @essentialrandom i mean it's still reasonable to:
• attach the metadata to the image in addition to sending just the metadata over the API, and
• autofill the image description when uploading an image with existing metadata
but nobody really does that
