Day 14 of #DecRecs nearly half way there!

Today I'm reccing a story about good people trying their best in a post-cilmate change world "Pan-Humanism: Hope and Pragmatics" by Jess Barber and Sara Saab

@Forestofglory I also love it when people mention the length. Sure, I can see that when I click through, but it helps! Personally I am very unlikely to watch a video unless it contains cute animals, but that's just me 😅😅😅

By the way if you rec vids it's extremely helpful to me to get some idea of how much dialogue is included. because of auditory processing issues I can't watch vids that have dialogue and music happening at the same time or too many sounds my brain thinks of as language going on all at once. I've been using "only song" or "song and dialogue" as helpful notes

@tempest this is a bit difficult to answer — disability limits my ability to travel, particularly internationally so the truth of the matter is that i would almost certainly never worldcons outside of the US (and even ones on the wrong coast would be a monumental effort)

but that same difficulty with travel is why i feel so strongly about worldcon not being held in the US! international fans deserve just as many chances to attend. so my answer for ‘which of these bids would you support’ and ‘which of these worldcons would you attend’ look v different

Well @Satsuma recced a Guardian Vid so now I'm having a lot feeling about that show. So today's #DecRecs is going to be a Guardain fic!

meditations ex post facto by raven

archiveofourown.org/works/1888

A lawyers AU about human rights and doing the small necessary things to make the world a better place. Also cupcakes

#FicRec

@mathew syntax miscommunication it looks like — the square brackets are part of what you’re supposed to be replacing so if you delete them you should be good

additional sidenote: yeah mastodon is kinda like tumblr in that you can just stick /tagged/[tagname] on the end of someones profile page and turn up a full list of times someone has used that tag (on public posts — unlisted & followers only should still be unindexed). the featured tags option is just a way of publicizing that link, not enabling the search

Show thread

as a sidenote, would love reviews from anyone who read anything from glitch.cat.family/@Satsuma/tag w/just the info on canon i give in the rec itself — my tolerance for not knowing what the fuck is going on in fic is p high from years of fandoms where canon is too large / incoherent for any one person to reasonably track so i’m curious how well i’ve calibrated for people who are uh, not like that

Show thread

@lookitmychicken not generally but all my dec recs have been fairly newbie friendly so far! it’s been an interesting challenge

so fun fact despite having almost 3x more guardian fics bookmarked than any other fandom apparently none of them are passing my could plausibly be appreciated by someone unfamiliar with canon test. so instead i'm reccing one of the classic 'please join us in having feelings about these boys' vids:

Disability help, long post

@bengesko i suspect ‘normal’ is going to vary somewhat from location to location & program to program but i don’t think this has to be an immediate red flag — the only disability aid i’ve received so far was for EDS & CFS/ME combo in a state run vocational rehab program (east coast USA). They did psychological screeners for everyone as part of the intake process. I went in, did some basic cognitive tests and chatted for a bit (with v heavy masking on my part lmao) and he went ok yeah you pass and wrote a note to my caseworker saying so

its a bit weird you weren’t notified before now it sounds like? but also disability bureaucracy tends towards the disorganization of a chronically underfunded gov’t agency so

Check out Tip No. 2 - Image Descriptions Rule!

Not only do the improve accessibility for all users on Mastodon, but they’re fun to write and they improve searchability!

Add Image Descriptions to your beautiful images of the Tannies next time you post! Include some info about the format of the media (eg. Image, Gif, Diagram) and some info about the content of the image.

📟🐱 GlitchCat Sunday Post, 11 December 2022

The GlitchCat offers news and updates from our corner of the fediverse to yours.

§ Instance News :—

Not much news to report today; @aescling finished Breath of the Wild and is now playing Super Mario Odyssey; @Lady has a few things she’s working on but nothing to show for it yet.

Many of us are continuing to use the hashtag to share things we enjoy!

§ Holidays and Observances :—

• 🍵 December 15 is Tea Day. Although the United Nations tries to celebrate this day on May 21 instead, December 15 is the day chosen by the countries where they actually produce the tea. Here are some of the resolutions from a 2008 Tea Day conference in Sri Lanka, and here is what the United Nations has to say regarding the importance of the day.

@sozou oh sure but the two groups overlap a fair amount in my experience?

@sozou there’s a whole instance for the conlang toki pona! toki.social

polyglot.city likely also has a fair few conlangers, given the theme

: I mentioned the other day looking forward to the day when fics set on twitter could be recced as charmingly vintage period pieces so! time to test that by finding out if we've all been off LJ for long enough for that to count as charmingly vintage! this fic was written in 2011 for the kinkme-merlin comm. It's an AU where the characters of BBC Merlin are in the Starz Camelot fandom and is both a loving tribute to internet friendships/romance and a by my memory (admittedly not necessarily reliable, satsuma was a tiny fandom baby in 2011) pretty accurate representation of what LJ fandom was like at the time. Absolutely no knowledge of BBC Merlin necessary

Also to make up for missing yesterday if you want a lighter (tho no less earnest) fic, try the Dwarf Queen. political marriages! relationships based on mutual respect! some highly plausible worldbuilding on how dwarvish relationships traditionally work and what they'd consider romantic

The Dwarf Queen (10689 words) by SassySnowperson
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Discworld - Terry Pratchett
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Relationships: Carrot Ironfoundersson/Cheery Littlebottom
Additional Tags: Marriage Proposal, Marriage of Convenience, Politics, Dwarf Culture & Customs, Dwarf Gender Concepts, Friends to Lovers
Summary:

Carrot is named King. Of the Dwarfs.

He doesn't want to be king. His nomination is really just a nasty case of Ambition and Politics on the part of some upstart dwarfs. Still, he needs to be very careful how he handles this. Accepting the throne means war. Rejecting...probably also means war.

Help comes from an unexpected source when Cheery Littlebottom offers up a unique proposal. If these ambitious dwarfs want a king, then maybe they should be forced to accept a queen, as well.

~

"No, I've beat around the bush enough, I'm just going to come out and say it. You should accept the coronation, and at the same time announce that you are happy to announce a political union with the Coal Hills Mine, and you are marrying the daughter of their respected engineer, Jolly Littlebottom. Which is, um, me."

Carrot ran through that plan a few times, before he was confident he got the relevant details. "Marry…you?"

: one of the fun thinks about the discworld books is that
pterry would make jokes about some fantasy cliche, follow it to its logical conclusion & somehow end up doing four or five genuinely interesting social commentaries along the way. eg he decided dwarves only had one gender, dwarf, and it was just the humans applying human binary gender standards to them that lead to the assumption of all dwarves being male. which then raises the question of, well, what happens to dwarves conceptualizations of gender when they move out out of the mines & into the cities where there's people doing gender everywhere? Thus, the phenomena in the disc of dwarves deciding they're female dwarves actually, and then having to figure out what the hell that actually means. Modern Love decides to just keep going with that, through a series of OC vignettes
