@maya @greyor@weirder.earth yeah i def prefer paying a little extra so that other people who can’t afford it (or are new and not sure if the place is worth the money yet or whatever) can still have accounts but i don’t see why i’d even care if another instance felt otherwise, let alone turn it into some sort of drama lol
& agreed on journalists having no idea what to make of this place, even tho really i don’t think its *that* hard to figure out

@greyor@weirder.earth @maya hachy got banned for their admin making a bunch of super dubious takes on main and then banning donation posts as “spam” afaik.
I’ve never heard of eg. social.coop getting any shit for requiring people donate to their OpenCollective to get an account (i think its like £1/mo or something like that)

#Ao3TagOfTheDay technically not tax fraud from a legal standpoint but definitely tax fraud from an emotional standpoint
the whole thing is relevant to the ongoing discussions re:Ao3 & the OTW but i particularly want to highlight this bit: «Because the Board's power is also limited. I especially want to emphasise that right now, when we're going into a new OTW Election. Don't put your faith in a changing of the Board. The Board cannot make changes without the backing of staff and volunteers. Particularly staff. The Board only has as much power as the committees are willing to give it. Additionally, communication between volunteers and the Board is almost always funnelled through committee chairs which gives committee chairs even more power. And again, it's a lot easier to replace a Board member than it is to replace a committee chair.»
FairestCat, a past OTW board member talking about the OTW’s historical resistance to change, the limits of the boards power, & the OTW’s institutional culture of hoarding money & valorizing unpaid work even when its objectively the worse option: https://fairestcat.dreamwidth.org/2023/06/26/the-otw-and-money.html
@gnomon rhubarb, lots of cherries & blueberries, & two giant bunches of basil on top of my usual provisions (cheese, yoghurt, bread, & veggies)
@gnomon my farmers market haul today was top notch
@ljwrites @greengaybles fwiw, while almost all the Ghibli movies have been re-dubbed since i first bought them (lets say early 2000’s) i haven’t heard much criticism of the new dubs—considering that you’ve gotta fight through the “but my childhood!” response already, that probably means they’re pretty solid?
@ljwrites @greengaybles i think that historically, there wasn’t a lot of money for international localizations in the american market which meant a lot of subs/dubs were done really cheaply. And when you’ve got a shoestring budget, dubs require p much all the work subs do *plus* a full cast of voice actors…so yeah all things being equal there can be a decidedly more pronounced drop in quality for dubs when money is tight & money was tight during a lot of peoples first exposures to translated media
disney (who has lots of money) licensing localizations for ghibli (who have the bargaining power to demand it be done right, and also a large local market justifying a higher budget) is so far from that situation that any opinions formed under those conditions are completely irrelevant.
(i say american market instead of translations into english bc licensing is done per-country & there are def english speaking countries with very different situations re:international media)
@lookitmychicken @asya my issue is facebook has never done anything without a strong profit motive…and the only one i can really see for them joining fedi is selling our data
