If the currently circulating rumours are true, Meta will only federate with some larger instances, and will provide financial support to those instances.
Smaller instances may request federation, but won't be guaranteed it, and won't receive compensation.
I doubt any of the fannish instances are big enough to to be invited to meta's party. Even if they were, I doubt that any would accept meta's terms.
Of course, there may be no basis to these rumours.
