@SteveM@blorbo.social its similar to how having an email account with gmail wont let you log into protonmail or vice versa — federation allows the different sites that make up fedi to talk to eachother (hence being able to find and follow the people you mention via search) but you still interact with the network from your home server

the UI for communicating this definitely needs improvement — there’s no reason there can’t be a redirect protocol to make this easier (and to prove it, several people have built just that as browser plugins!)

@joonjuliet my replies were all set to the unlisted setting, if you want to see what they look like in practice :)

@joonjuliet ah yeah the name is a little confusing! unlisted is more public than a followers only post (which only your followers, or people you’ve @ mentioned can see) but less public than a standard public post. So an unlisted post wont show up on the local/federated timelines, or in any hashtags but it is visible on your profile and if its a reply to a public post it will show up in the replies to anyone who clicks through. They can also be boosted (retweeted) like public posts

@joonjuliet threads are welcome! but if you’re worried about being bothersome, some people will switch the post visibility from public (the globe) to unlisted (the open lock) after the first couple posts, so that they don’t put a ton of things into the shared timelines all at once

@pamela where are they coming from? Boston’s weather might be a bit much for someone who’s used to the milder winters of the south/most of the west coast

@AAA @MxMorden thanks! i’ve got a few more in this post i made a while back as well — dw doesn’t have the best discovery mechanisms (which in a roundabout way can actually be what makes the site so nice) so i try to recommend the active communities i enjoy when i can

beautifulmechanical: music and vids recs, any genres but there’s def a few kpop fans who post there)
bigbangindex, dw_community_promo, and fandomcalender: all good places to hear about upcoming fandom events for various fandoms—esp helpful for new users!
marchmetamatters: upcoming event for organizing and archiving meta! which is always good but esp for people who are in the process of leaving a social media site and might want some support finding and saving the stuff they’ve written there that they want to keep
sunshinechallenge: a smaller event similar to snowflake challenge, but in july instead of january!

@telepathypiper yes there’s lots of options! my preference is tooot (yes, 3 o’s) which probably has the most minimalist interface out of the iOS apps available right now (which i personally appreciate, tho if you prefer lots of pretty animations and such maybe try toot! or metatext instead?)
