i have slowly come to the dawning realization that i am accidentally reading a YA novel

what's great about the metroid series is some people will read Samus in Metroid DREAD as like 40 and other people will read her as 25

@witchfynder_finder apparently Metroid Dread is the Official End to the Metroid (species) Saga and will be setting up everything they do in later games in the Metroid series so yeah important not to flub this one guys

@monorail it looks like there's a decoding="sync" html attribute too

but yeah that should work :(

maybe check the network pane in the web inspector? you should be able to check when the images actually get requested/downloaded there

the other solution is to make a sprite sheet (all the images in one file) and to display the image as a background on an element using background-clip to only show the part you want. that's harder to do but you definitely won't get any flickering there, since it's all the same image

@monorail one solution is to download the images via javascript ahead of time (calling .decode() on the image element for example)

there are other ways i'm pretty sure but that's the easiest to explain / implement

don’t just say “making reference to french philosophers” give me names!!

are we talking sartre or derrida?? maybe cixous?? is this radio man dropping tidbits about castration or decapitation on live air?? these are the details readers live for!!

babe did you just tell me a phrase is untranslatable and then translate it

i could never have this level of calm patience with the ignorance of my readers

Show thread

oh no she is translating for the reader now too

“hey you rube, when i say ‘hija’, that’s a term of fucking endearment okay?? it means ‘daughter’.”

Show thread

what do you think the odds are that an american publisher would make me put that in

Show thread

imagining texting a man like ‘hnnnngggg… thirsty… voy a beber… agua… (that means “i’m going to drink water” if you don’t speak spanish)’

Show thread

hey OP you don’t actually have to translate for your terrible texting fling the man has Google he can figure it out

it’s like that moment when you read a sex scene and you realize with horror that the author is either a virgin or else is the recipient of a long history of disappointing sexual encounters

only instead of sex it’s flirting via DMs

Show thread

actually getting lowkey upset at how bad this author is at writing flirting via DMs

i think i’m supposed to like this tool i think he might be the love interest

Show thread

that’s… not a very good podcasting concept 🙃 and you didn’t exactly sell it well 🙃🙃

i can understand the protagonist being New To This and not having her feet under her yet but who is this basic ass tool fucking falling for it, i wonder

Show thread

anyway this is a small criticism in the grand scheme of things but please do not start your book about podcasting by having your main character go “it’s time you asked yourself the REAL questions. who ARE you?? and what do YOU want??” and then having somebody reply like 🥺🥺😭 so true 😭🥺 i was just thinking about this myself 🥰🥲

writers love to be like “such and such made a brilliant speech” without knowing the first thing about what makes a brilliant speech and consequently showing their entire ass

Show thread

look writers, my take is this :—

if you’re going to have your character be good at something with words—say, poetry, or public speaking, or telling folkloric stories—you’d better fucking learn how to be good at that thing yourself
