@roxie congrats!! hope it goes well for you!!
@z in academia, LGBT(Q) refers to any alliance of lesbian, gay, bi, trans (and queer) organizations or movements, each of which may only identify with a few of those labels. it is a heterogeneous term which serves as an umbrella for antihomophobic activism and support in general.
queer, on the other hand, is a more specific set of movements concerned primarily with dismantling or contesting normative ideas of gender and sexuality. it's generally not a label one applies to people or organizations who haven't taken the label on themselves.
on an individual level, generally the organizations which describe themselves as queer are more progressive and accommodating than those which describe themselves as LGBT, and are more political at heart. but in aggregate, LGBT draws the widest net over organizations or movements.
re: spaces, using the term “LGBT” similarly suggests “we are looking to accommodate people who are gay but aren’t committed to the queer movement”, which can be good for some things (support groups), and bad for others (political activism)
@roxie this is a Rails position but if you’ve done backend work before you can probably pick up the basics of Rails in pretty short order. in my experience these kinds of jobs in the US are not very competitive and i wouldn’t be surprised if the same were true in the UK.
as a word of warning if you do get the position, Hyrax can be a pretty steep learning curve, but as an upshot i doubt anyone applying will have much existing experience. it will position you well to pick up similar jobs in the future.
trying to resist saying “solarpunk is a genre of white settler anarchists who have turned to utopianism to avoid confronting the fact that they are a walking, talking ecological disaster for the land they inhabit, and that it is why it is completely aesthetically bankrupt and has yet to produce a single definable esthetic trait which is easily accessible to the poor” to somebody who clearly cares a great deal about solarpunk
