re: English words ultimately derived from other indo-european languages by way of languages of other families, a partial list
admittedly anime is the only case i know of in which English directly borrowed a word with Indo-European origins from a non-Indo-European language. (FR → JA → EN). the others i listed are either persian or greek in origin by way of arabic, but mostly passed through medieval latin or non-english european languages.
i expect there are others tho and would be curious to hear any similarly direct examples
the reason is that in ukrainian, "як" (which can be transliterated in the latin alphabet as "yak") means "as", apparently.
there are other less extreme problems that it would have even without the detect language issue but this one was very funny
english translation
today i discovered how the translations of metazooa work
it's horrible.
if you have spanish as your language, for example... the game will use google translate to translate the common names of animals from english to spanish. however, in fact, it translates them from "detect language" to spanish.
this game thinks that in spanish they say "como" (aka "as") to refer to yaks.
hoy descubrí como funciona las traducciones de https://metazooa.com/ .
es horrible.
si tenés castellano como tu idioma, por ejemplo... el juego usaría google translate para traducir los nombres comunes de los animales de inglés a castellano. sin embargo, de hecho, traduce los nombres de "detectar idioma" a castellano.
este juego cree que en castellano dicen "como" para referir a los yakes.
programming posting
well, i got it installed. carelessly i installed it to a place that isn't actually in the library search path by default but that is fixable
not sure swings at the bat is a real idiom for reasons of you don’t swing at a bat in any bat sport i think.
not the first time we’ve answered a question in perfect sync. but to be fair we have watched like four or five seasons of University Challenge together. so a lot of swings at the bat.
food
locro kinda rocks btw. stew is best food group after grains. but there's maize in locro so it works out
food
plan D did in fact work out. sofi also actually had a somewhat more seasonable if slightly less dessert-y option in mind so we might have gone for that as plan E instead of the unseasonable one
food
strike that, time for #4. with luck we won't need to go to the rather unseasonable #5.
