okay apparently this is not really etymologically correct although the latin dispar may have influenced its meaning.

@wallhackio this realization brought to you by encountering the spanish word “dispar”

the word disparate literally just means uneven

incidentally, Anna Bruegel (one of those no-disambiguation-required painters, a daughter of Pieter Bruegel the Elder) married a different painter referred to as [name] the Younger.

Show thread

the Bruegel family sure had a lot of painters

turns out "Bruegel the Elder" and "Bruegel the Younger" are actually ambiguous. because there was a Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a Pieter Bruegel the Younger, a Jan Bruegel the Elder, and a Jan Bruegel the Younger. not counting all the other painters in the Bruegel family that aren't called "the Elder" or "the Younger"

food

i may have posted about this before but it's just such an amazing, wonderful thing.

i love the ubiquity and cheapness of bakeries here

you can get a kilo of french bread for the equivalent of like 3 US dollars. also there's bakeries every couple blocks

it is sometimes surprising which words with similar forms in germanic and romance languages are romance -> germanic borrowings versus germanic -> romance borrowings versus both separately inherited from PIE

@Lady dunno. could be they just don't care that much when it comes to the cheapo downloadable games? i do kinda wonder if the games actually live up to the names

the number of games that nintendo will sell you with "hentai" in the title is surprising to me

all caps, no image desc

@wallhackio there’s a swap function in the standard library.
