princess would appreciate film recommendations.
bonus if they're not from anglophone countries
@Satsuma lots of them… musicals. spec fic. historical. romance (ideally gay). documentary. horror. mystery.
@alyssa have you watched korean sci fi / space western Space Sweepers (2021)
@alyssa have you watched Legend of Hei (2019) or Ne Zha (2019)
@wallhackio @alyssa also mon oncle (1958) is a weird film but in a good way
@wallhackio @Satsuma will eventually give it a try!
@alyssa
Piracy-only (I've TRIED), coming-of-age drama that smiles through it when it counts: I / 아이 (2021) dir Hyuntak Kim, starring Kim Hyang-gi
A solid shmaltzy musical do NOT think about the real-world context yet to come: Yidl Mitn Fidl (1936), in Yiddish, filmed in Poland, most of the production staff are USAmerican (most famously Molly Picon)
@alyssa It's not uncritically GOOD autism rep (protag isn't really allowed development across the plot, I think they missed a choice in writing the butcher-shop sequence that weakened the commitment to the character, arguably it's stereotyping and tokenizing in general and maybe somewhere in the -sploitation metagenre) but you're not gonna see anything like this: Chocolate (2009), Thai martial arts film starring Jeeja Yanin. She's incredible in it (if you're into martial arts films) and I keep meaning to watch the next two films she was in, Raging Phoenix and This Girl Is Bad-Ass.
Jan Švankmajer's Alice [in Wonderland] (1988). IIIRC a rather faithful adaptation of the book in mostly-silent stop-motion with characters made of household scraps, tho it's been a while since I've watched this.
@alyssa I hope these recs give you whiplash,
and that one of them is helpful.
@gaditb noting down!
