@wallhackio @coriander i think the second season is the only one that manages to feel satisfying in its overall narrative structure; books one and two struggle with balancing episode a day plots and their own narrative. but i also have a hard time imagining how exactly you could go about “fixing” that because all the fucking around in book one makes the overall story so much more rich and alive, and all the fucking around in season three gives really emotionally satisfying payoffs fur the core cast’s arcs, Zuko especially. it would be easy to make the show too “focused” and lose so much of what makes it special

“abave” is an odd choice; it’s simply not in use in English at all. the Oxford English Dictionary repurrting it last known usage to be in the early 16th century, with several examples in Middle English. “To be surprised, disconcerted, discomfited, upset”; almost always used in the passive voice syntactically.

the rest are uncommon, but are words. an abaca is a plant from the Philippines. an aalii is a bush from Hawaii (the name borrowed directly from Hawaiian). abba is a term from Aramaic meaning ”father”, current senses inspired by its historical usage in Judaism (abbas is plural). abaze is an obscure variant of abash, to make embarrassed in a way that makes someone lose self confidence

the other two are rather obscure but real English words. (the furner is a direct borrowing from Latin “let them[-singular] be absent”, used in UK English to denote a furmally purrmitted absence from a college fur the day; the latter is a unit of measurement fur electricity. i had to look these up on the spot ftr)

(and if you’re a real nerd, how the phonology (that is, what the sounds is the language sound like) have changed. though as a shorthand the vowels and diphthongs are fairly close to IPA; it might come off as stereotypically Irish or Scottish, if you’re familiar with those accents. Hollywood pirate speak is not that far off)

@vaporeon_ my accent would be terrible, i only kind of know the phonology, and i don’t know how the meanings of words have changed well enough that i would purrobably say something anachronistic or nonsensical given the meaning of the words at the time. but, like, the basics of the grammar, i can do

it is good characterization that rouxls speaks in nonsense early modern english, to really drive the point home that he’s a complete poser. but god did it make me hate him when he was introduced lmao
