@writers @ljwrites i guess part of what i’m working around here is just suspension of disbelief? somewhat similarly i recall an actor from a show i watched commenting that he hates getting complements on the technical details of his acting from fans, because if they were noticing that then he wasn’t able to get them fully immersed in the world of the show. and i’m not sure i take as extreme a stance as he does (its fine to appreciate something for its artistic merits without being fully immersed, and one can certainly read/watch something multiple times through different lenses also!) but there is a valid question as to how much analytical/critical thought do i want to be doing by default and for me at least it’s hard to accept the world as “real” if i’m simultaneously pulling apart the craft of how it was written and questioning what they chose to show me

@writers @ljwrites there are certain fanfiction critiques that implicitly critique this (eg. missing scene/episode tag fics, outsider POV) by highlighting things the artist chose to leave out or downplay and those are often very interesting and fruitful creative avenues! but you still can only work with what they chose to show you, ultimately, even in those more resistant frameworks

@writers @ljwrites for non fiction i’m definitely critically aware of this kind of “objectiveness” but yeah i think for fiction there’s just a certain point where like…sure they could be misleading me about how the world works in their choice of framing, but also like they created the world so

@tsunderdog i think its fine to have a fee structure thats like “x amount for the commission itself and a high quality scan plus optional y in shipping and handling if you want the original”

@Betty @imp it *does* sound like a Celtic loanword honestly but wiktionary claims they’re both from latin! Pelt as in sheepskin from pellis and pelt as in to throw a thing at something from pultāre

and then we just reduced them down to the same sound from there i guess 😂

@Betty @imp pelear is apparently literally “to grab by the hair” (pelo in Spanish) so it’s closest English cognate is probably pelt? (noun form, though now i’m wondering whats up with the verb pelt)

Food mention (mostly hypothetically)

@compostablespork somehow i get the feeling pie wont fix this one 😂

@moonsea @soph_sol i think the idea is that rather than having to figure out all the details you just describe the vibes to the LLM? but agreed, its a weird name choice

Fitness and binding ask

@SocialGaff often a looser binder (say, two sizes up from what they usually wear) will still get you a relatively flat look without nearly as intense compression — I ended up just sticking with the larger size for pretty much everything after getting used to how much more comfortable it is (and easier to get on and off) but it works as a “just for more active days” thing also

if they are feeling noticeably short of breath i would *definitely* not ignore that while binding — take a break and see if you can get your breath back and if that doesn’t happen relatively quickly, or your lungs still feel inflamed after (any of: breathing feels weird, coughing, phlegm, compression feels “tighter” than normal) try to get the binder off as soon as possible.

re: food

@vaporeon_ @wallhackio well i have never seen meatloaf served sliced up with each slice individually fried but perhaps thats because we have scrapple and the rest of the country is doing breakfast meatloaf like that

food

@vaporeon_ @wallhackio its somewhat like spam except rather than being mostly meat its meat mixed with cornmeal. excellent if you’re a broke farmer who grows corn and are trying to make your limited meat supply go further, or if you’re a pork butcher stuck with all the random scraps from carving out the good cuts and wanna serve it then as a dish instead of a plate full of scraps

@Betty 1) its tasty 2) some people have a thing about overly refined sugar processes and view maple syrup, which has all the not sucrose left in as more “wholesome” 3) new england just has a lotta weirdly intense pride about their maple syrup and sometimes that manifests through baking
