forcing myself to remember the verb for "to hit" by going "it's the one that starts with 'peg', as in, i'm going to hit that [from the back]"

btw this is not a joke, i used this mnemonic and improved my "soccer verbs" spanish lesson score from 50% to 100%

@imp in soccer, what is used, pegar? Golpear? Dar la patada?

@Betty pegar! the duolingo sports module had pegar, patear, and pelear (in addition to atrapar) so i was fighting for my LIFE

@imp p words, v annoying. Patear is easy for me to connect to ped: pedestrian, pedal, quadruped, etc, but the rest I don't see a cognate!

@Betty @imp pelear is apparently literally “to grab by the hair” (pelo in Spanish) so it’s closest English cognate is probably pelt? (noun form, though now i’m wondering whats up with the verb pelt)

@Satsuma @imp maybe verb pelt is one of those "no, this one came from Celtic" or whatever situations

Follow

@Betty @imp it *does* sound like a Celtic loanword honestly but wiktionary claims they’re both from latin! Pelt as in sheepskin from pellis and pelt as in to throw a thing at something from pultāre

and then we just reduced them down to the same sound from there i guess 😂
