musing about hashtags, fediblock meta, long oops
@greyor@weirder.earth hmm not entirely sure I agree — twitter has had fulltext search for a while which significantly decreased the utility of hashtags & my extremely non-expert observation is that tag usage declined pretty sharply as a result. Meanwhile most other microblogging sites (eg. tumblr, instagram) maintained tags as a core feature and developed culturally specific conventions around them (tagging a tumblr post like an insta post and vice versa will net poor results) which indicates that tagging as a method of finding posts on a topic / other people who are interested in a topic is a frequent need or microblogging style social networks
My take is
1) Hashtags are the shittiest kind of tag and the only reason mastodon uses them is because Gargron still can’t let go of twitter — the users themselves are fine
2) Tags on fedi seem to me to be most useful for finding new people to follow with shared interests (eg people putting lots of tags in their intro posts, these are often very standard proper nouns so people can easily find them) and creating collective ongoing opt-in conversations around a particular subject (these are more more likely to be a bit odd because distinctiveness is prioritized over random peoples ability to find and use the tag, eg #florespondence or #SilentSunday ).
Type one tags do contain many new users (bc new users are most in need of people to follow & get followed by) who are probably also shaky on site culture in other ways. If you’re not looking for new connections these tags will mostly seem pointless. Totally legit to just ignore them. Type two does contain some hashtags that are communities importing the tags they use from other sites (eg. I use #Ao3TagOfTheDay which I brought with me from Tumblr) but also a large number of hashtags native to mastodon that see regular use by well established accounts. Still may not be ones thing of course—they’re generally not useful outside of the group that created them! But a decidedly different beast than type one tags in terms of usage patterns.
Okay, #Hometown v1.1.0 is coming out tomorrow! There are so many changes (and I will explain them all in the release notes) but I think I am most happy with the tweaks to the Mastodon v4 mobile layout.
* Removed giant header
* Retractable right hand menu (click the top right hamburger icon)
* Reduced margins overall for a more compact layout
Attached pics: before, after, and after with retracted menu. Note you see a whole extra post in the 'after' screenshot due to all the removed elements.

@twistylittlepassages my first instinct was https://copychaser.itch.io/speeddatingforghosts
speed dating so both reasonably fast to play and nothing smutty & offers a variety of gender options for the dates (including ‘unspecified’)
blanket cw for discussion of death and dying, but i never ran into anything graphic on the subject and by my memory its clear for the other standard triggers. searching the name turns up listings for ios mobile, steam, & Nintendo store as well as the linked itch listing
but maybe ghosts are too weird for a first try???
@timbray@hachyderm.io thoughts on authorized fetch? ( https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#authorized_fetch ) It seems like it shares some commonalities with your proposed step one particularly when used in combination with disallow unauthenticated access ( https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#disallow_unauthenticated_api_access )
Of course we still have a long way to go with building on top of that for your other suggestions re: federation & data handling contracts but
@godtributes a plausible theory tbh

📟🐱 GlitchCat Sunday Post, 01 January 2023
The GlitchCat #SundayPost offers news and updates from our corner of the fediverse to yours.
This update covers the past two weeks, since I didn’t bother with one last Sunday!!
§ Current Events :—
• It is Public Domain Day here in the United States, and there are some very cool things which are now unencumbered with copyright here!
§ From Our Users :—
• @Lady continued work on her shrine-xslt static site generator, giving it rudimentary support for generating Atom feeds.
• @Lady also published a playlist of her favourite songs released in 2022.
• @aescling came out to her family and, semi‐relatedly, is in the process of moving, so be tolerant of any disruptions on the sysadminning side of things here.
§ Holidays and Observances :—
• 🍻 05 January is Twelfnight. In the Catholic tradition, this is the night before Epiphany, but in the English tradition, it is a night of partying to close out Yule. Great time to use up any partying leftovers from the holiday season!
• 👼 06 January is Twelfday, if you need a day for eating your king cake 🍰.

hi!! i have questions for #matrix homeserver administrators!
i have a private homeserver for friends and members of a community i run. a good number of people don’t wanna join it because i have federation disabled, and their client of choice doesn’t support multiple logins
what consequences might there be to enabling federation in this case?
is there anything i should take into account to retain the privacy of my users and prevent unintended room joins from external users?
this is something i’ve put off researching for a good while, and i figured, well, maybe one of y’all kind, smart individuals might be able and willing to help a catgirl out~ <3
