@kiesa DAW numbers (most of) its books so I suspect Direct Descendant is the 1979th book they’ve published in paperback. If true the number should be listed on the cover, spine, &/or copyright page (assuming you have a physical copy at least, idk how it works for ebooks)

this site reports misprinted numberings and gives some of the history: isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pubseries.cg

and librarything records the publication number for some 1800 titles, the most recent of which is Aftermarket Afterlife by Seanan McGuire which was published in 2024 as book 1957

I imagine when they started doing this they did not imagine they’d get into “looks like a date” territory

@pixouls COL is included as a factor in wage policies: «Among the data points in this dimension: What is the ratio of the state's minimum wage to the cost of living for a family of four? What is the ratio of unemployment insurance payments to the cost of living?»

@stelepami what a charming plant! do you have any supports in the wall along that narrow ledge to keep it up there or is it just managing to balance?

@aschmitz @wallhackio you should get an apron, they’re quite nice to have even when you havent put all your shirts in the washer

#mood update:

@Lady @aschmitz i knew that bit already because she explained it to me at great length at breakfast

#mood update:

@Lady i see you are working on your site today?

@alis yeah admittedly the most recent one was just…wildly repetitive in a “this book could have easily cut a quarter of its wordcount and lost zero meaning” which is totally the kind of thing a good editor could handle but who knows whether a big 5 publishing house would actually bother these days

@alis yeah this + i have read good books thru self pub but i have also read books thru self pub where i was like “this author is clearly a decent writer but its a shame they didn’t have the resources for an editor to fix [insert glaring issue here]”

@wallhackio M says that if you’re following the pattern of thief -> thievery then mischievery implies that mischief is a type of guy

@jaeger @kiesa its never too late to get your first feed reader!

@djsundog i don’t think they’ve gotten to trains yet but Mural Arts Philadelphia was founded off more or less exactly this logic just about buildings

@moonsea oh man that is…really not all that surprising honestly

@vaporeon_ @wallhackio 1) lots of art is food, have you never been to a nice restaurant

2) the question at hand isn’t whether i would eat the clodburger but whether a vaporeon would

@wallhackio @vaporeon_ youre the one boosting clodburgers into my timeline

@wallhackio @vaporeon_ is the borger also a clodsire like in that other post

@tozka i occasionally get linked to pillowfort posts so evidently at least a few people are still on there? but also they seem to have still not fixed the bug that makes scrolling constantly break on mobile so i’ll admit i don’t read most of the posts i’m linked to….

@TheBookewyrme oof that really sucks, i definitely would not have reacted well to hearing qslur discourse in person either
