@Satsuma@wandering.shop & the plague's aftermath was a major factor in the rise of the Ottoman & Safavid empires because of the disruptions it caused to the preëxisting...everything really

plague facts™

Did you know Egypt's population (approx 6 mil at the beginning of the 1400's) was halved by the plague/resulting famine from all the farmers being dead

The fact that we treat the Black Death/Bubonic Plague like its some sort of european thing is actually kinda wild?

re: Food (dessert, veg)

@hafnia@weirder.earth nice, thank you!

re: Food (dessert, veg)

@hafnia@weirder.earth where did you find the recipe for these? They look so good!

@k start with whatever series the people who got you into star trek are fans of — there’s really not a benefit to watching them in any particular order

re: US Federal politics (mostly good news)

@greyor yeah I get so much leisure reading done on buses and trains! Especially for longer trips, I would hate to have to stare at the road for hours, when I could be doing something else instead

re: US Federal politics (mostly good news)

@greyor public transit is juuuuust good enough that i’ve been able to get away with being carless but it definitely requires me being willing to spend more time than drivers spend, and occasional lyft/favor from friends with cars

re: US Federal politics (mostly good news)

@Lady yeah which is why my feelings are mixed instead of just being against them basically

re: US Federal politics (mostly good news)

@greyor oh wow municipal fiber sounds great! And yeah those are p much my thoughts on the bill as well

re: US Federal politics (mostly good news)

Public transit funding, electrical grid upgrades & expanded access to broadband are all being funded by this package which I’m happy about

Not personally thrilled by the amount of $$ going to highways and roads but I’m not surprised its in there and it will help some people so whatever

US Federal politics (mostly good news)

«Biden signed the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan into law – the largest federal investment in infrastructure in more than a decade…In the House, Democratic leaders expect to vote on the roughly $2 trillion climate, safety net, and tax package this week and send it to the Senate…If the social safety net and climate bill passes the House and Senate, the total increased infrastructure spending as a share of the economy will eclipse Roosevelt’s New Deal.»

Food access poll

@RadiantEmber like 90% of the walk there is on a mixed use path in the park tho, which is v nice :D

Food access poll

@RadiantEmber the closest grocery store is a little under a mile, so usually 15 minutes or so to get there. I prefer to take the bus back, since walking that far with a whole load of groceries can get a bit uncomfortable but I have walked home plenty of times when the transport schedule hasn’t worked out (the bus route has very convenient stops near both me and the store but it comes about once every 45 min)

Food access poll

@Anke @RadiantEmber @TQ mixed zoning (when done well at least) is great! Cities that insist on strict zoning segregation get so weird and unnatural feeling.

Like I’m not saying I want people to be able to turn random houses in the middle of some neighborhood into a nightclub, but everyone should have at least a corner store nearby

vegan food advice asked

@Corina@weirder.earth is there one person who’s both gluten free and vegan or could you make separate a gluten free thing & vegan thing?
