I'm curious, do you have access to a store or somewhere you can buy ingredients for cooking with (like bread, fruit, vegetables, rice, canned food- something you can cook a meal with) in easy walking/biking/public transit distance to where you live?

I'm thinking like around 20 minutes to get there but your scale of what's close may be different from mine

And like, accessible as in you won't have to cross a 4 lane road on foot without a crossing to get there

@RadiantEmber I'm living in a small-ish town (about 10k people), with other small-ish towns right next to it. I have at least 2 places you described in easy walking distance. By bike, the number grows to 6 or more, with a whole lot of specialized stores like bakeries (about... 8-10?), asian food stores or organic stores. I often say I miss living in a bigger (around 100k) city, because that's what I am used to. There, it's laughably easy to get food. Like... 2-5 minutes walks.

@TQ wow! I was gonna ask what country you're in but I see you added in the reply

I guess this stuff is especially bad in the US because a lot of cities were like built around and for cars, as opposed to smaller towns in other places that probably have a long history of community shops and walking places and stuff

We also have like very separate residential and commercial zoning which means houses are mostly only near other houses and very far away from shops

Food access poll

@RadiantEmber @TQ There's a greengrocer a way up the street where the shop is on the ground floor of a 4 storey building, with apartments on top of it. So much for zoning. XD

@Anke @RadiantEmber @TQ mixed zoning (when done well at least) is great! Cities that insist on strict zoning segregation get so weird and unnatural feeling.

Like I’m not saying I want people to be able to turn random houses in the middle of some neighborhood into a nightclub, but everyone should have at least a corner store nearby

Food access poll

@Satsuma @anke @RadiantEmber @TQ I've got a couple convenience stores 0.5 miles away, and at the 1 mile mark there's a small grocery. You have to cross a 4 lane road to get to it, but there are crosswalks and signals. Bike lanes, too.

The real wealth, though are the restaurants (2x donuts, 2x pizza, Chinese, cajun, and about 4 food trucks) also just over a half mile away.

Austin, TX, USA where we're gradually trying to fix the zoning.

@edebill ooh food trucks nearby sounds really nice!

Food access poll

@Satsuma @Anke @TQ I honestly never considered how weird our zoning laws are but it really is strange to completely separate residences from places to get food and stuff
