war in gaza
« It became evident to U.S. officials that Israeli leaders believed mass civilian casualties were an acceptable price in the military campaign. In private conversations with American counterparts, Israeli officials referred to how the United States and other allied powers resorted to devastating bombings in Germany and Japan during World War II — including the dropping of the two atomic warheads in Hiroshima and Nagasaki — to try to defeat those countries. »

« Mr. Blinken has visited Israel three times. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III met with his counterparts there, along with Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, the commander of Central Command, and then Rishi Sunak, the British prime minister. A European official said their visits were not coordinated with the United States but that everyone had the same idea that it would be hard to start a ground invasion while senior officials were in the waiting room. » lmao well that's a strategy i guess

re: hygiene; webcomics
even if we had magically cured covid i would still mask during cold & flu season it's fucking october
at some point your comic stops just being a no-COVID AU and becomes a “world which still doesn't know how respiratory illnesses work” AU
re: hygiene; webcomics
at some point artists are going to get over their personal reservations and just accept that some people are like this now, including probably members of their principal cast, but we aren't there yet

« The campus protests of the late 1960s sought in part to dismantle the in loco parentis role that colleges and universities had held in American life. But the past two decades have been shaped by a reversal of that, as institutions have sought to reconstruct this role in response to what students and parents paying enormous sums for their education have seemed to want. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, during the 2020-21 fiscal year, private four-year colleges spent 40 percent of their budgets on student support services. Over the span of the past 20 years, the dollar amount has more than tripled. »

everybody blaming Egypt for closing the border but « Egypt says it wants to relieve the plight of Gazans, and on Thursday its Foreign Ministry urged countries and aid groups to send shipments to the international airport at El Arish. Although Egypt says that border is open, multiple Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza side on Monday and Tuesday have rendered it effectively closed. And Israel said that no humanitarian aid would be allowed to enter until Hamas releases the 150 people, including children and older people, it captured during the brutal raids on the weekend. »
re: war in gaza
this is a tactic that the state of israel (and letters to the editor from n·y·t readers) have been emphasizing: put out an unreasonable call for evacuation, then claim that everyone who remains behind is either with Hamas, protecting Hamas, or being used by Hamas as “human shields” (and thus Hamas, and not the State of Israel, is responsible for any harm which comes to them)
one million people. twenty-four hours

« Israel’s military warned in a statement on Friday that residents of northern Gaza should relocate to the southern half of the territory within 24 hours.
The United Nations said that such an evacuation would entail moving more than one million people and lead to “devastating humanitarian consequences.”

The Israeli military said in its statement: “Civilians of Gaza City, evacuate south for your own safety and the safety of your families and distance yourself from Hamas terrorists who are using you as human shields.”

It was not clear how the U.N. could organize a massive population movement on such a short notice given many of the roads were damaged and impassable from Israeli airstrikes. »
