@wallhackio @aescling @coriander i think what my criticism boils down to the fact that 3D movies are still being developed and sold as special effects exhibitions and not as good movies. the whisper of the heart sequence is not technically impressive animation. the art is pretty basic. it isn¦t flashy, there aren¦t complicated motions or particularly difficult‐to‐animate sequences. it is straightforward and largely rudimentary

but it is a huge flex and massive accomplishment because of what it is achieving cinematographically. it is a feat of moviemaking and visual storytelling, far more than it is a feat of animation. it showcases the skills of the director and of the whole team in how much it is able to accomplish with relatively little.

that isn¦t the focus of spiderverse. they are trying to show off how well they can use animation software, in terms of modelling, framerates, filters, camerawork, and visual spectacle. and they are weldirected movies that leverage those technical accomplishments in ways that boost storytelling. but this scene would have been more compelling if it were more mundane and naturalistic, if they put that energy into creating a boring backdrop that actually felt real and looked alive. it would have been better if the characters felt grounded and relatable and like they actually lived in new york city and not cyberchase.

but either 3D cannot make mundane imagery compelling, producers of 3D movies will not allow teams to go there, or directors are too obsessed with technical flexing to make it happen. and i think that is an indictment of the genre. if i watched a bunch of 3D movies i could probably come up with some counter·examples but it really feels like a medium that does not take itself seriously from a cinematographic perspective, and can only tell stories about fake children in fantastic settings detached from reality and nature and everyday life

@wallhackio @aescling @coriander i think all of the movies on my list show the level of technical prowess needed to pull off this fairly mundane sequence from whisper of the heart. they don¦t spend four minutes on it necessarily but they can set a scene. i am unconvinced that any 3D animated feature has demonstrated the competency to do it. maybe WALL•E?

@wallhackio @aescling @coriander they are trying to show off with visual spectacle here but it is all camerawork. they created one (1) 3D model and didn’t even bother to animate it, and then did some camerawork in it to “show it off”. please compare to this sequence, which actually put time and energy into its setting and knows how to create a real sense of space instead of just being like “yeah we hired some guys who know how to use Blender”

@wallhackio @aescling @coriander how do you do this shot and have absolutely nothing in motion. no helicopters, no planes, a big fuckoff bridge with no cars. zero birds, not a cloud in the sky. no cool sun effect, just generic haze with render fog. prerendered video game background level of bullshit. could have just been a painting AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER IF IT WERE
