@coriander in fairness there is SOME similarity to the opening of Twilight Princess where Link is a farmboy until monsters attack, but Twilight Princess also does it much better than this and didn't need to rely on tired tropes to do it

@coriander they're both farmboys but this author has clearly bought into the whole hero narrative arc where somebody gets a taste of adventure but their dad or uncle disapproves but then their whole family gets murdered and they pick up a sword

@akjcv@types.pl that was the thing where i used to live; the city did sidewalks but the county didn't, so in places where one side of the road was in city limits and the other side wasn't only the city side would get a sidewalk, and when it left the city the sidewalk would end

@alyssa @aescling obviously you can release into a pause though (i’m not arguing against “cat tail”) so this is a bit murky and entwined with the question of “what constitutes a phonological word”

@alyssa @aescling yeah i think we’re definitely getting into “what physically constitutes a consonant” here (is it the stop, the release, both separately, or both together) which is not entirely settled territory

my feeling is that a stop cannot release into another stop at the same position because you’re already stopped, you have to release into something else before you can stop there again. but i fully believe that there are many linguists who would disagree on this take
