javascript quiz qualification

assume `a` and `b` are integers, numbers, and that `a + b` is less than `Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER`; this isn’t a gotcha where `a` and `b` are strings and i’m not talking about rounding errors here

javascript quiz

is `-(a + b)` always the same value as `-a + -b`?

when people have encountered this sort of thing in the past, from trawling the github issues for glitchsoc

@noelle @lauren @craigmaloney@octodon.social oftentimes it's because webpack ran out of memory partway through packing, meaning it wrote the file saying that it packed the thing without actually packing the thing

that's almost definitely where i've run into it too (trying to run masto on too small of a VM)

in that instance, RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rails assets:clobber unwrites that file (well, it clobbers all the assets) so that webpack forgets its previous attempt and does the thing again

but you can fix that issue and still not get anywhere if webpack just doesn't have enough memory. NODE_OPTIONS="--max-old-space-size=350" or some other configuration may also be necessary if node or webpack are just not getting the resources they need

@noelle @lauren @craigmaloney@octodon.social i wrote the webpack configuration for glitch-soc so i can say it almost definitely is different from mainline (to support glitch's advanced themeing capabilities) but unfortunately that was almost six years ago so i can't remember any specifics (and it wouldn't surprise me if things had changed)

i've definitely dealt with something like this error before, which iirc i solved by shelling in and manually running webpacker to create a correct manifest in the right spot of the working directory and then redoing the normal asset compilation yada yada but again it's been so long since i've touched this that i can't give any specific steps to follow. (i think one of the rake tasks is bad but there is another more specific rake task which might fix the state so the more general one works again? idk. don't want to speculate but the answer is in that vein)

god, with all of these billionaires launching their own twitter replacements, it makes me envious. if only that was something us ordinary people could do

english language fuckery

ok but my alternate english orthography IS actually pretty good

re: 📖

@gaditb yes i think it is very false lol; XMPP enjoyed the support and brand recognition of the Jabber Software Foundation and jabber.org

english language fuckery

@coriander speaking of, i forgot the other option

we can forget rhoticity and just go back to writing “all” as “orl”

english language fuckery

@coriander when i actually redid english orthography completely to be sensible i used Å completely differently, to represent “ou” e.g. mouse=mås, house=hås

and you know if i was redesigning English completely to be sensible i would stand by that, but in terms of more of a gradual transition i think that leaving OU as a digraph is probably fine

english language fuckery

@coriander "hot" etc is said with the same vowel as "hall"

english language fuckery

@coriander oh i have cot~caught i say fall /fɑl/ not /fɔːl/ but that /ɑ/ is in fact the sound of a short O in my english

english language fuckery

@coriander i mean the obvious alternative is to write tol and smol but it gets fuzzier with words like fol (fall), bol (ball), etc

tål, smål, fål, bål, these are more obvious

english language fuckery

@coriander look sometimes A makes the sound of an O and idk what to do with that other than to write it as an A topped by a little O
