@Satsuma whiiich is why i think having a single centralized archive is the wrong approach, and instead we should have federated (moderated) fansites which are built to be easily grouped / archived into (moderated) collections

@Satsuma like comment harassment is a problem because you get an email, it is attached to the bottom of your fic, it interferes with your communication with other readers, etc

none of that is true of bookmarks. i do think fic authors probably should be able to remove their fics from another user’s bookmarks / block them from bookmarking their works, but that seems like a relatively simple thing to implement compared with [everything else]

@Satsuma i think the advantages to enabling folk organization and categorization of fannish content FAR outweigh the negatives

the kind of actual harassment which could be performed via bookmarks or collections (beyond just like, “Joe’s Archive of Boring Fics, which is not harassment, just uninspired criticism, and can be safely ignored by fic authors [who aren’t even notified about bookmarks anyway]) is sufficiently difficult enough to pull off to be rare and falls easily under “abusing the service for things the service is not meant for”. there is still a need for moderation there, but no differently than someone just putting that same content in a fic and publishing it?

@Satsuma bookmarks and collections are very important features; they should expand and improve upon bookmarks and collections and get rid of the other stuff

U+2026 … HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS is literally just “three dot leader” they just gave it a different name for some reason (western bias)

i stand corrected; it looks like U+2024 ․ ONE DOT LEADER and U+2025 ‥ TWO DOT LEADER are indeed intended for this purpose; i had assumed they were technical characters

in chinese, the above comma is only used for enumeration of items in a list, and ‹ ， › is used for commas e.g. between phrases. japanese writing i think can feature both but i don’t think there are as firm of rules in place.

@Satsuma this is actually a bit unconventional for two reasons: (1) japanese ellipses don’t typically use fullwidth periods like that, and (2) typically they are centred on the line rather than placed on the baseline

my guess is that it’s “just use periods” but we should also acknowledge that unicode does not have particularly good ellipsis guidelines presently
