@coriander @aescling @amy i used to think Times New Roman was the boring essay font but then i stopped writing essays and now i realize it is good

@aescling i probably would have used the type colours rather than the fur colours

@moonsea wikipedia is very good for learning about languages!

@coriander @wallhackio and anyway let me tell you over the garden wall knows you can put tape over the hole on a cassette to record over it

@coriander @wallhackio one time when i was on an internet date with a girlfriend (who was older than me) we watched an episode of Elementary where Sherlock Elementary explains to the viewer how placing tape on a VHS lets you record over whatever it came with and my date partner was like “wait really??” and i was like “yes this is true of all tapes; that is why in the Blue Scholars song Geo says ‘I’ve still got cassette tapes with tape on top of them / maybe I should auction them / lately I’ve been rockin them’ but internally i was like “this is the problem with todays generation they never recorded over a tape”

if you are going to buy a corn chip from Frito Lay, JUST BUY SANTITAS

@moonsea deno was simply the best way to write tiny scripts you run from the shell with good security guarantees and no dependency management. but the deno devs and javascript community writ large never cared about writing tiny scripts and just wanted to create web applications. so i guess it is back to ruby or python and dependency chain attacks where somebody updates a package and suddenly your shell script is uploading your ssh keys to the internet 🙃

@moonsea please please community slopfree fork of deno ??? yes i know this will never happen

@aescling @wallhackio we have gone on lots of long walks with caleb at night so if he arrived an eevee he should have evolved by now

@wallhackio umbreon because you have a type advantage against your twin

@gaditb @futurebird there is no word because there is no framework for understanding the transgression. the West understands data as “belonging to” [framed as intellectual property] the people who collected it, not the communities from which it was collected. we do not have a concept of intellectual property which belongs to communities and covers the information that comes from them, so we cannot name a transgression when that information is wielded against those communities.

this has been a topic of discourse re: legal studies re: traditional knowledges and “development” of the Global South since at least the 90s. the Big Data angle is just one particularity, and not even a particularly urgent one in the face of biopiracy and paywalling of traditional learning materials. but i would start my research there instead of reading Western Internet Scholars, who probably lack the means to even conceptualize what is really going on considering Western Society does not even register this as a problem

@coriander what if you did but you thought it was normal because you live in the PNW
