i've seen two links in the past week and one from a somewhat reputable source

why do people link to deseret news

actually THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES already said everything we need to know

news apps: just let me tell you what things i'm interested in

@Canageek@cybre.space there is also shapecatcher.com/ if you prefer drawing, but there are so many unicode lookalikes that it can be difficult (for example i got "circled crossing lanes" and "circle with superimposed x", which are not the correct characters in this case)

if all else fails you can try just browsing the mathematical symbols and operators block but i find a text search with a good guess works ~85% of the time

@Canageek@cybre.space for future reference, i typically use r12a.github.io/uniview/ to get the unicode character corresponding to a given symbol (type a guess for a word which might be in the name, like "times", into the search box and click "text")

if you know the LaTeX there are probably sites which have those mappings as well, although i'm not so familiar with them

once you have the character in unicode, pasting it into wiktionary or wikipedia can be a great resource

« It is not that queer people create culture and normative people get to consume it. We are trying to meet our needs »

@Canageek@cybre.space wiktionary has more options if that's not right: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E2%8A%

U+2297 ⊗ CIRCLED TIMES; pasting that symbol into wikipedia gets you en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tensor_p

« he did no more than trace languid circles around her nipples, a move which might have charmed a skittish animal but failed to increase her ardor »

« before she could speak, Link pulled an enormous rainbow-spotted fish from the too-small pouch at his waist and waved it by the tail in the air between them.

“I have lots more fish!” he said. »

at any given moment one of these is probably playing in my brain

i always get one of two songs stuck in my head:

- behind these hazel eyes

what we actually need in creative writing is mentorship, the same thing we need in the arts in general

not coursework

Show thread

like it was fine but i could take a hundred such upper level creative writing classes and still never be any closer to being a good writer

Show thread

i have taken exactly one creative writing class and honestly it justified me not taking any of the others

@noelle i mean it only stands out in this author's case because the rest of their writing is pretty alright so it's a bit of a veiled compliment

like they haven't quite figured out a style which actually suits their strengths yet and so are still just going with whatever their preconceived notion is of what a story should be

they'll get better in time

« he tended to want a bit too much eye contact for her nervous disposition »
