@witchfynder_finder i mean i also don't care about christmas so they are just Winter Decorations

@witchfynder_finder the kibi calendar compensates for christmas decoration day by calling it “Witchnight” and claiming that the purpose of the lights and decorations is to scare away spooky creatures

considering you are goblin, maybe it works?

how are these people not immensely frustrated with the quality of their webpage

Question about Drawing / Art :boost_ok:

@lapis @noelle the one thing i see again and again re: drawing is the idea that your drawing should be recognizable whether you’ve been working on it two minutes or two hours. drawing from life is useful if you “have the eye of an artist” and “know how to draw”: if you can look at something, discern its fundamental shapes, and make a quick sketch which captures its “motion”. but it’s easy to get embroiled in details and photorealism and miss out on those fundamental skills.

i think one thing which can help with making art is learning how to “read” art critically: how to look at someone else’s artwork and understand the decisions and approaches they made as an artist. this won’t make you instantly good at those things, but if you can better understand what other people are doing, then you will have an idea of what you yourself need to study.

The Rise of Kyoshi

« “Those aren’t excuses to murder him!”

“You’re right. They’re not excuses—they’re ample justifications. I guarantee you that many citizens have suffered immensely from his greed and negligence, and many more will die if he is allowed to keep breathing.” »

The Rise of Kyoshi

« The darkness of her abandonment must have boiled to her surface as the three of them trudged uphill back toward town, because Rangi ran the back of her nails down Kyoshi’s hand, a playful and teasing distraction that held more meaning now than a hundred volumes of history. Kyoshi nearly tripped and fell on her face. »

@KitRedgrave @witchfynder_finder with clocks it’s less the fact that it’s an analogue gauge and more the whole “simultaneously base‐12 and base‐60” thing; kids are like “oh no i have to multiply by 5”

it’s probably possible to replace all analogue clock interfaces with digital interfaces in our world today, but that’s putting the cart before the horse. that’s like saying “there’s no need to learn more than Basic English because that’s what all newspapers are written in.” it’s true that we can create that world. but a better world would be one in which everybody had the proficiency to read clocks.

anyway bea called my homepage oldschool and yes it is but also that page uses Grid Layout and Fetch API

what kids don’t realize is that for the first few decades of the internet, people wrote webpages which were useful to themselves rather than portfolio pieces for social media followers or potential employers

Show thread

the true oldschool is webpages which are actually useful

these nerds think a black background and green text is oldschool but don’t know how to build an actually functional website

sometimes i write code which might be useful to others

and sometimes i write code which no person should ever try to replicate

and i like to think that usually it is clear which is which

no changes to the underlying XML, or to the /Fortune/ page which renders it, i just parsed and extracted data from it instead of using an IFRAME
