I know I'm getting old because I'll hear zoomers say something like "There's really no need to teach kids how to read analogue clocks anymore" and I have to stop myself from sputtering in indignation

@KitRedgrave @witchfynder_finder with clocks it’s less the fact that it’s an analogue gauge and more the whole “simultaneously base‐12 and base‐60” thing; kids are like “oh no i have to multiply by 5”

it’s probably possible to replace all analogue clock interfaces with digital interfaces in our world today, but that’s putting the cart before the horse. that’s like saying “there’s no need to learn more than Basic English because that’s what all newspapers are written in.” it’s true that we can create that world. but a better world would be one in which everybody had the proficiency to read clocks.

@Lady @witchfynder_finder yeah that's what i was trying to approach. reading a clock is not just reading a clock, it's reading anything that is like a clock in that way. transferrable intuition
