#Ao3TagOfTheDay OOC, because kim can actually communicate his feelings to at least a moderate extent, sorry i know thats unrealistic
on disability and access needs
i want to take some time for international cripples day to talk about conflicting access needs and why "accessible" isn't a catchall.
basically, access needs can conflict. this is true in every space, but in the physical realm, let's talk stimulation. some folks *need*, for one reason or another, to make sudden noises, shouts, or have a lot of stimulation around them. others *must not* be around that, for trauma, epilepsy, or overstimulation. and that's okay! folks who need to be noisy or stimulated aren't being ableist, as long as they're aware of what they bring to the space and how to navigate around it.
things that help one person *can* be the same that hinder another. similarly, image descriptions! many folks (be they visually impaired, unable to understand the relevant parts of an image, or without a good internet connection to download images) need them. but you know who it can take spoons to write them as? *also visually impaired people*, cognitively impaired people, folks who are just Tired. this requires nuance (but community encouragement *is* fantastic)
also, content warnings. they are an accessibility tool. they're also a way to have to think about categorizing your posts, and potentially folks who are already currently traumatized having to take *more* time to explain their trauma
access needs conflict! it's fine! live with it, get over it when someone *can't* do something, and be chill
An extremely on brand for me #DecRecs: a murder mystery with a side of court politics & secret identity shenanigans
The Fox's Grief (38617 words) by nirejseki
Chapters: 9/9
Fandom: Original Work
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Beautiful Detective With Peerless Martial Arts/Frail Secret Spymaster He‘s Trying To Seduce
Additional Tags: Mystery/Procedural, vaguely ancient China, Secret Identity, Politics, Age Difference, Royalty, Murder, Bureaucracy, Asthma, Rescue
Summary:
No one in their right mind would ever seriously try to woo Lin Ronghu, the Emperor's infamously ruthless (if unofficial) spymaster.
Not that that's stopped the local legend, a (self-described) beautiful detective with peerless martial arts. His crush is a major inconvenience - at least until there's a murder that puts Lin Ronghu's most hated political nemesis straight in the frame. Since Lin Ronghu can't believe that anyone would be that stupid, he decides that maybe having a private detective around might be good for something after all...
For the third day of #DecRecs I bring you one of my very favorite SFF shorts "The Witches of Athens" by Lara Elena Donnelly

#DecRecs: Namjoon-centric in honor of Indigo? Not actually the namgi fic I was failing to find a few weeks ago but it does contain a similar understanding of the importance of avoiding eye contact lmao

Tiny stores which typically sell some mix of grocery items, snack foods & (occasionally) prepared food times such as sandwiches, often compensating for a smaller selection and slightly higher prices through the convenience factor of their accessible near-residential locations (aka, the place you go when you just need to run out for some milk or a banana) are called:
I don’t normally recommend things but I’ll give #DecRecs a try. to start: I’ll recommend the tabletop role-playing game Strike!
It’s a very charming setting-neutral (but action-focused) game that was perhaps the first of the games that decided to combine a D&D-4e-inspired but streamlined tactical combat mini game and combine it with a rules-light core system for situations where that doesn’t apply (or isn’t warranted). Its core rules are centered around simple d6 rolls and learning new skills by trying unskilled rolls. Its combat system has some very delightful class designs, such as the class that’s about playing two different characters and a very cool take on three variations of the classic “Vancian” magician. Its bipartite class/role system also means you can satisfy almost any sort of role in the team with any class.

My dearest Renata,
It has been a long voyage to the jungle.
Our theme for December is Amnesty! That means you can post #recs for any past theme—from any year—as long as the work hasn't already been recommended for that theme. #fandom https://fancake.dreamwidth.org/2155122.html
I'll share here a reminder I also periodically fired off on birbsite - If you are feeling overwhelmed by stuff I, or anyone, is boosting - head to the user's profile, click on the 3-dots, and "hide boosts" from the account. You'll still see their own posts, or things they embed in other ways as they wish to comment.
But it'll filter out those of us just quickly firing off a boost to share/mark for ourselves/acknowledge a post.
A couple of clarifications on #DecRecs inspired by people's comments:
Yes please use the hashtags if you want to join in!
Yes, you should use the hashtag even if you don't plan to rec things everyday!
Yes, p feel free to add the hashtag to existing rec threads as long as they are happening in December
Tonight's game of DOG OR NOT DOG: decidedly NOT dog. (Though, this fellow was regarding his bag with such solicitous care, I was convinced I'd found DOG.)
For the uninitiated, DOG OR NOT DOG is a game I play, where I take pictures of dog-shaped objects with my phone, then zoom in to see if they're dogs or not dogs.
Tonight is a wintry night in Vancouver. The snow is snittering full snart. I couldn't get the clearest of pictures...but that's a lot of NOT DOG.
@admin wanted a public / boostable version of my explanation of viewing tags on other instances shenanigans, so! weird fedi facts of the day:
1) instances can choose whether or not their federated timeline is visible to logged out users or not! For any instance running Mastodon 4.0+ this is (if visible) the default page when you type in an instance URL. for instances running mastodon forks or older code try instance.name/explore (if someone wants to chime in in the comments with the equivilant info for pixelfed etc please do!)
2) if an instance makes the federated timeline visible, it also technically makes hashtags visible for that instance (presumably bc tag searches are just filtered versions of the federated tl?) there's not a real UI for doing this, but they're visible at instance.name/tags/YourTagHere (eg https://fandom.ink/tags/ao3tagoftheday or https://mastodon.art/tags/mxtx )
besides browser bookmarks there's no way to follow/save your search so not terribly convenient, but if you're just trying to figure out which instance is best for cdrama fans or whatever its a decently effective tactic
