During this weeks round of ‘So is Ao3 ever going to get its shit together re:fandoms racism problem’ someone suggested ‘well if they’re going to keep claiming they’re an archive why not make it more like an actual archive and get rid of all the social aspects’ (specifically kudus, comments, & hitcounts, though the pro’s & cons of also ditching bookmarks were discussed)

re: plague facts™
@Satsuma@wandering.shop part of the reason why this irritates me so much is because i feel like the same 'it originated in Asia [talks only about what happened in Europe/the US]' thing is going on right now, nearly 700 years later with covid
re: plague facts™
@Satsuma@wandering.shop & the plague's aftermath was a major factor in the rise of the Ottoman & Safavid empires because of the disruptions it caused to the preëxisting...everything really
re: plague facts™
@Satsuma@wandering.shop there were areas in China that suffered from outbreaks for seventy years before it got to Europe!
Probably 90% of Hebei died!!
plague facts™
Did you know Egypt's population (approx 6 mil at the beginning of the 1400's) was halved by the plague/resulting famine from all the farmers being dead

re: US Federal politics (mostly good news)
Public transit funding, electrical grid upgrades & expanded access to broadband are all being funded by this package which I’m happy about
Not personally thrilled by the amount of $$ going to highways and roads but I’m not surprised its in there and it will help some people so whatever
US Federal politics (mostly good news)
«Biden signed the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan into law – the largest federal investment in infrastructure in more than a decade…In the House, Democratic leaders expect to vote on the roughly $2 trillion climate, safety net, and tax package this week and send it to the Senate…If the social safety net and climate bill passes the House and Senate, the total increased infrastructure spending as a share of the economy will eclipse Roosevelt’s New Deal.»
re: historical catholic politics
I’m not like, pro Avignon but:
a) they aren’t *that* much worse than plenty of non-french popes, like there are plenty of 70 yr runs of shitty Roman popes
b) lets be honest the whole thing was at least 60% Rome being OUTRAGED that they weren’t being treated like they were the center of the world anymore and, smarting at the loss of social capital (as well as probably some literal capital, pilgrims were a lucrative business) deciding that obviously the popes MUST be puppets to the french king to decide to reside in France because there was no other possible reason a pope might voluntarily leave Rome
