@Betty i am reminded of that one kurt vonnegut quote where his wife is like “if you bought an entire book of stamps you wouldnt have to waste a half hour going to the post office every time you wanted to mail a letter” and he’s like “ok but walking to the post office is the highlight of my entire day????”

@Betty yeah i mean, a tv show doesnt really allow for much of a conversation either, but our financial model there isn’t “this is only profitable if the people producing this do nothing but produce content for 18 hours a day and the people consuming it spend all their free time watching”

@Betty the term parasocial relationship was wildly overused for a while there but even that fact itself does seem to point towards us as a society struggling with this a bit yeah

i dont think streaming is necessarily inherently worse than like, youtuber or fedi or whatever on a per dose basis. but the vibe i get is that current monetization systems require you to put in crazy hours? and like, doing that much of ANYTHING can’t be healthy

@Betty yeah high level chess is firmly outside of my area of understanding as well so my knowledge is all secondhand but we can take comfort in the knowledge that there are streamers out there with intellect, if not common sense

@Betty a number of highly skilled chess players do make part of their income from streaming so there are definitely niches that run counter to the trend but i think they mostly exist outside of the specific “influencer” streaming sphere (and as you say, much less likely to go viral and attract the notice of people outside their area)

@Betty i mean, i feel like “being spontaneously entertaining for many hours on end” requires the ability to turn off the bit of your brain that wants to consider things before you share them with the entire world at least so maybe less “makes you” than “required prerequisite” but

@soph_sol @Betty i mean, i am still left with much confusion as to why every american canned tomato is terrible, even the whole peeled ones, but it does seem like standards here just being extremely low is part of it

@Betty i have a spare freezer in the basement and a passion for food preservation and batch cooking, i’m sure i can make it work

@Betty i mean i’m mostly thinking about the “whole peeled” cans here which presumably cant have been concentrated and rehydrated

@Betty damn now i’ve gotta try these tomatoes too

i’ve always been baffled by how bad US canned tomatoes are (in comparison to italian brands, which are common around here due to all the italians) and now i’m wondering if this is one of the reasons why….

@Betty oh that looks tasty! i’m glad it came out well

@Betty also, you can eat it with a grilled cheese which is always a plus

@Betty tomato? warm and comforting but also evoking the sweet energy of summer

@wallhackio @The_T (i voted trans but i am increasingly leaning towards plural as i ponder it)

@wallhackio @The_T i suppose this could also be evidence of batman being plural and just knowing batman was the one fronting

@twistylittlepassages yeah unfortunately i dont have minifig specific advice, but i’ve found that the considerations for setting commission rates are *remarkably* similar across industries so i figured it might at least be a helpful starting point :)

also unfortunately basically every industry that does commissions has a subgroup of commissioners who are doing this as a hobby and dont value their skills/time that highly as a result bc they are just trying to recoup costs. cue infinite discourse as people debate whether this behavior is appropriate and if no how to get the hobbyists to stop (they will not stop)

@twistylittlepassages do you have material costs eg. are they providing the figs or are you? is it totally custom in terms of what they can request or are you just asking for vibes and then doing what you want? will you accept revision requests?

generally speaking, i’d figure out about how long i thought it would take and multiply that by a hourly price and then tweak up/downwards according to the above questions (down slightly for more artist freedom, up significantly for anything that might add to the time it takes to do)

@kate always kinda baffled by this tbh. are they hoping a statistical likelihood machine produces actually valid URLs? or do they just never actually click on search results and just read the summary bits?
