@pagrus @twistylittlepassages nitty gritty just stands like standard rhyming reduplication of an existing word to me (easy peasy, hodge podge, etc) but i did not follow up to check
@pagrus @twistylittlepassages have attempted some internet research and it looks like bad egg was the original invention, coming directly & uneuphamistically from how terrible rotten eggs are. There was apparently already an older term in British slang “curates egg” for when something is terrible, but politeness requires you to praise its good features anyway (wikipedia has extensive documentation on the history of this one: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curate%27s_egg ) and if the term has any precedent besides the actual rotten eggs it was likely that
However apparently in 2002 a British police officer claimed that political correctness had gone “too far” citing phrases he claimed the police force had been banned from using including nitty gritty & bad egg. The British police claimed they didn’t have a list of banned words at the time, and there’s no evidence that either of them would be on said list if there was, so it seems like a fair assumption that the dude just threw “bad egg” in there to try to prove how ridiculous his non-existent PC culture problem was and then it accidentally got circulated into internet lore without the context
thinking 'outloud' about website set up, comments welcome
@JessMahler the word you’r looking for is responsive design, i think?
@RussSharek it does look like it might spin excitingly if one tossed it, what with the off center knob
@RussSharek truly baffling!
@runpunkrun yeah i’ll be surprised if they let us keep asking questions haha
this does create a kind of odd dynamic where, between the “you can only ask q’s during meetings but we’ll keep answering them after” and the specific formatting requirements for questions, audience members are heavily incentivized to pre-prep any questions that come up between meetings and then just log in and immediately start submitting them regardless of meeting content
@runpunkrun well thats interesting? and makes the recent post in #announcement that they're committed to answering "at least 10 questions" during the meeting slightly more sensical
@lookitmychicken oh wow thats wild! really curious as to how the totally reconfigurable interior works out over time
re: hygiene; webcomics
@Lady I mean personally not but
re: hygiene; webcomics
@Lady tbf much of the western world decided to live in a “not knowing how respiratory illnesses work” AU for like, two whole decades after SARS 2002 and I would not be surprised if, in a world without covid, that state would have simply continued until the next pandemic
hygiene; webcomics
@Lady maybe cubetown has a super strict decontamination process so everyone inside is functionally bubbled & illness free
hygiene; webcomics
@Lady i havent gotten to webcomics yet but watching a docu about professional kitchens from 2017 was *terrible*
iPhone-specific request for info, especially for the new-ish SE
@platypus hmm thats odd, its much newer than even the last SE so you’d think if anyone who was still selling SE’s would be selling the 13 mini also? shame because it really is one of their nicest form factors imo
iPhone-specific request for info, especially for the new-ish SE
@platypus I have the 13 mini which is almost exactly the same size as the original SE (so, notably quite a bit smaller than the newer SE) and am very happy with it. If e you had the old SE and thought it was a good size, I’d recommend going for the Mini over the newer SE both for the better camera/screen/processors and the fact that it’s actually properly a smaller model
a large assortment of ideas, some of which can be combined in various ways (and all of which are vegetarian because I am, but could probably be adapted for a more omnivorous diet)
@Forestofglory also https://cookbooks.leannebrown.com/good-and-cheap.pdf assumes a US context in terms of pricing & availability but may also have some decent inspiration in it

- pasta with jarred pesto or tomato sauce is only a bit more work than pasta with butter and might add some variety while still keeping your current routine which seems to be working okay?
- if you’re up to it sometime, peel a bunch of garlic cloves and poach them in olive oil (or some other kind of oil) on your stoves lowest possible heat until they’re golden and cooked through and then store the now extra delicious oil in the fridge to use as a topping for pasta/rice/etc. Or if you’re slightly more ambitious, use to sauté pre-chopped frozen veggies in and then put *that* on the pasta/rice/etc
- premake or buy a couple spice mixes so you can just throw them on carbs to make them tastier without thinking too much!
- frozen peas can just be put in anything made in boiling water when its almost done cooking (~1-3 min is my preference but ymmv)
- boiled eggs + sesame seed oil + nice soy sauce can really elevate an instant noodle packet into something more meal like (also a good one to add those pre-chopped frozen veggies to)
- set up a rice cooker like you normally would for a couple servings of rice & then dump a can of your preferred type of drained canned beans in right before you hit start. Definitely improved by also throwing in some herbs/spices or topping with garlic oil
- you can make p good oatmeal out of steel cut oats in the rice cooker! throw a handful of dried fruit and a little extra water in for both flavor and nutritional variety
- quick cook grits + stir in some shredded cheese + top with fried egg &/or a sliced tomato
@platypus ugh yeah that sucks
@platypus yeah error beeps and confirmation beeps really need to be *clearly distinguishable*
