Really useful legal guide from the folks at the EFF for people running fediverse servers:

eff.org/deeplinks/2022/12/user

(disclosure: I advised them on this work a bit)

sympathy & advice re:vent :)

@siren as a fellow dropout (CFS/ME) i absolutely feel you on the awkwardness. even outside of the shame/stigma this is just not something that has a clear social script. i never knew what to say to people id lost touch with when i dropped out and they pretty much never knew what to say to me either (winner i think was the guy who randomly commented “wait you’re still alive???” on my insta one day lmao)

i also want to say you don’t need a redemption arc—your life path might not be normal but that doesn’t mean your accomplishments aren’t real or worthy of respect. and you absolutely DO have accomplishments, figuring out how to manage ones health is a whole journey in itself. i’m proud of you for making it this far, even if you can’t quite see it that way 💛

@MinnieLee4 hey welcome! if you’re looking for a tutorial, apobangpo.website/faq/ has some tips on how to use the site, or you can try fedi.tips for more info. but you can also just ask questions! we’re happy to help new users figure things out :)

@menziesii my recommendation is to go as large as you can manage w/out it getting in the way. even a super basic flag design is way more irritating to transmisics when presented on a 3 inch circle stuck to someones tote

Cory Doctorow reminded me that January 1, 2023 is Public Domain Day (observed), and this year we get a plethora of awesome ...

including METROPOLIS.

oh I think I'm going to have fun.

You better not cry. You better not shout. The MONSTER THEME POLL is coming to town.

I made a list, and I checked it thrice, and now we're gonna find out which suggestions go on to the monthly theme polls in 2023:

So a lot of people end up thinking that people here don't favorite much because they see posts with way more boosts than favorites but that's just because favorites don't federate!

For posts on other servers you will only see the likes from your instance, but for posts on your own instance you should see the likes from other instances too.

Favoriting is great, it's just not gonna federate to everyone who sees the post; it's about notifying the person who made the original post

#feditips

@tfb also not addressed in my post but since you brought it up, i do think its worth noting that i have so far seen zero evidence of people assuming public posts are not public or needing to be educated about the fact that random people might stumble across their posts. it is true some new people don’t know they have a choice about posting privacy and that may impact their behavior somewhat?

but like, for many people their first experience is making a post that reads ‘hi im new’ and getting several responses from absolute strangers welcoming them to fedi (i know because im often one of those strangers!) and also because i see a lot of ‘oh wow i just joined and everyone’s so friendly here????’ posts

@tfb my point is not that public posts aren’t public—i browse the federated timeline often enough to be well aware of that fact—but that part of the function of hashtags and guppe groups invite interaction from a specific group of users (people who browse that tag or follow that group). a group repeatedly interacting over time is a basic prerequisite for community building, so its important to note when a feature facilitates that

so if global fulltext search is implemented (which it currently is not in 99.9% of instances, to be clear) i’m arguing that it would undermine the community building processes of our current discovery methods and that downside is worth balancing against the net gains of increased discoverability

@dancingfool @smeraldo_nz are you using the website? there should be a set of icons across the top of the screen to help you navigate — the house is home (people you follow), the bell is notifications, the one that looks like three people is local (posts from your instance), and the globe is federated (every post your instance knows about — this will be very busy and sometimes contain weird stuff haha)

@smeraldo_nz hey welcome! its ok to feel a bit lost at first, you’ll figure things out pretty quickly (and if not there’s always people around happy to answer questions!)

if you haven’t opened the local timeline yet, you should check it out! It shows all the (public) posts made by people on your instance, so its a good place to make friends as a new user :)

if you enjoyed Feathers when i recced it at the beginning of December, you might also enjoy this other f/f fairytale-esque story of a knight who courts the mysterious woman she met in the woods…

The Forest Full of Light (2338 words) by LittleRaven

Summary:

A knight has an encounter in the woods.

ultimately, i’m unlikely to be seriously effected by any implementation of global fulltext — almost all my posts are locked to followers only and the ones that aren’t are often already intentionally hashtagged with the relevant tags (for the reasons outlined above)

but i still want to think that we are building a good thing here, and that means supporting better policies even when i’m not personally effected

Fully agree with GlitchCat’s reasoning (see above) for silencing instances which enable global fulltext search. however the doc primarily focuses on the detrimental effects of global fulltext and i’s like to additionally suggest that intentional discovery methods (eg guppe groups, hashtags) tend to actually be more effective for community formation than fulltext search because they’re explicitly opt in

for example, by adding a particular tag, i’m indicating that i expect regular readers of said tag to see said post and potentially respond. an equivalent post surfaced via global fulltext search doesn’t contain that same implicit invitation
