@tfb also not addressed in my post but since you brought it up, i do think its worth noting that i have so far seen zero evidence of people assuming public posts are not public or needing to be educated about the fact that random people might stumble across their posts. it is true some new people don’t know they have a choice about posting privacy and that may impact their behavior somewhat?

but like, for many people their first experience is making a post that reads ‘hi im new’ and getting several responses from absolute strangers welcoming them to fedi (i know because im often one of those strangers!) and also because i see a lot of ‘oh wow i just joined and everyone’s so friendly here????’ posts

@tfb my point is not that public posts aren’t public—i browse the federated timeline often enough to be well aware of that fact—but that part of the function of hashtags and guppe groups invite interaction from a specific group of users (people who browse that tag or follow that group). a group repeatedly interacting over time is a basic prerequisite for community building, so its important to note when a feature facilitates that

so if global fulltext search is implemented (which it currently is not in 99.9% of instances, to be clear) i’m arguing that it would undermine the community building processes of our current discovery methods and that downside is worth balancing against the net gains of increased discoverability

@dancingfool @smeraldo_nz are you using the website? there should be a set of icons across the top of the screen to help you navigate — the house is home (people you follow), the bell is notifications, the one that looks like three people is local (posts from your instance), and the globe is federated (every post your instance knows about — this will be very busy and sometimes contain weird stuff haha)

@smeraldo_nz hey welcome! its ok to feel a bit lost at first, you’ll figure things out pretty quickly (and if not there’s always people around happy to answer questions!)

if you haven’t opened the local timeline yet, you should check it out! It shows all the (public) posts made by people on your instance, so its a good place to make friends as a new user :)

@essentialrandom toot! is the only ios app i know of that attempts any kind of visual hierarchy — not an app ive used a bunch so i wont comment on how effective said attempt is

@bloodwrites i heard that they’d quietly deleted the announcement thread / policy page about it but good to hear they’ve actually changed their actual moderation practices as well! (considering how long they waited after they’d started banning people to make a public announcement i genuinely wasn’t sure lol)

@alexis tooot (yes three o’s) has a clean minimalist interface — most the other ios apps seem to have animations that i find distracting

it is i think one of the newer ios apps? receives updates pretty frequently but there are some small things missing. they also offer a ton of interface language options, which i appreciate
