@pastelsinmysky i hope it works out for you! there’s definitely a heavy element of personal preference which makes it difficult to say which is objectively the “best” of the apps
@roland @imp @villainousfriend she’s only been volunteering for a year and answered “i dont know” to several of the Q&A questions about basic functions of the OTW so — seems fairly probable?
@pastelsinmysky i tested like, eight of them, a while back out of curiosity and the ones that felt full featured and stable at the time were tooot (yes three o’s), metatext, and Toot!
tusker and ice cubes were both super new at the time but may have matured since

@FrazzledBrynn this is one of those fedifacts that i see people see semi regularly, usually in the context of “i dont get it, faves are great!” but have never actually seen any evidence for
my theory is that people are just confused by the way boosts/replies are much more likely to federate so if you look at a post you’ll see every boost & reply your instance knows about, but only the faves that also came from your exact instance. which means the fav count can look p teeny even when its actually 3x higher than the other counts from the post authors perspective!
long, tips for having a friend with CFS
@MerlinJStar@weirder.earth i’ve had CFS/ME for over a decade, plus some genetic connective tissue hijinks
re: communication, offline i have one of those battery sign flip necklaces (this one, specifically, tho it looks like it’s not currently for sale: https://www.etsy.com/listing/214310611/communication-necklace-batteries-silver?show_sold_out_detail=1 ) — many fedi instances have similar sets of emoji for the same purpose. I’m feeling tired/I feel like shit/i need to rest/i need to tap out also all work
lots of people, including myself, have sensory issues when they’re tired. be cool about turning down/off background music, putting on closed captions, moving to a quieter space, etc. maybe a phone call is too loud but we can text chat, or i can’t look at a bright phone screen but i’m happy to lie in bed and mumble things on speaker. being flexible and chill about requests as they come up (we might not know in advance!) is really the best thing you can do
usually if i’m so tired i can’t even manage that, you just wont see me bc i’m definitely not making it out of the house and maybe not even out of bed. i put a lot of effort into managing my energy so those days happen unexpectedly less often than they used to (i’ve gotten better with practice, both in knowing my limits and in recognizing when i’ve passed them and need to start the “oh shit” protocols) and i can usually cancel plans/rearrange commitments before it really hits. if i do, be chill and trust i’m not blowing you off
after that point my priorities are making sure i get enough food and fluids to keep myself more or less functional and i’m not really thinking about people at all. if you’re the Friend With The Car, picking up cases of meal replacement shakes (ensure is usually the safest choice) or electrolyte drinks (my preference is Skratch Labs electrolyte powder, but not everyone wants to/can mix it themselves in which case caffeine free sports drinks like gatorade will work too) is a huuuuge help. Absolute worst thing is to wrangle heavy packages home when you’re feeling like shit
the big thing, *especially* for remote friends where you can’t necessarily lend a helping hand in person, is to just keep checking in in low pressure ways. don’t do anything that demands a response but regular “hey i saw this meme and thought of you” or “im hosting an online game night Friday if you wanna come” type texts mean a lot when you’re having a longer fatigue flare and struggling to maintain friendships as a result
@soph_sol wow that is a large range! good job goldfinches
@soph_sol the US really won the goldest finch competition huh
Raphael the protest medic, my art WIP
@alpine_thistle this is such a cool concept! are you planning on putting a medics cross on the backpack?
@zkat @52square@artisan.chat for the record the fact that the “official” mastodon apps which use the same 3rd party api as every other app, and which make several design choices bad enough that new users are frequently warned to use a different app get money while none of the fantastic apps that have been around years longer than either of the “official” ones have never seen a cent also bothers me for similar reasons. If the patreon was just restricted to docs and the mastodon server software itself that’d be one thing but the current situation is horribly unbalanced
@52square@artisan.chat @zkat per the official patreon: «The code of the project is available on GitHub. Besides the development of Mastodon itself, we develop and maintain:
Official Mastodon app for iOS
Official Mastodon app for Android
Mastodon server mastodon.social, currently hosting over 693,000 users
Mastodon server mastodon.online, currently hosting over 93,000 users
joinmastodon.org, the homepage of the project and related APIs
docs.joinmastodon.org, the documentation for the project»
The reason why its mastodon.social and mastodon.online which get money from Mastodon gGmbH and no one else is because the lead developer/guy who runs gGmbH, Eugen, is also the admin of those two instances and he’s never minded playing favorites
@sysadmin1138@octodon.social just a random add on, the proposals default example of an attester is the Google Play store on android. So the plausible deniability you discuss might very well be an android phone (largely google) being attested by the “3rd party” Google Play (google) so they can watch videos on youtube (google) which makes money by selling advertisement space (also brokered by google)
Seems p obvious that it’s now in google’s best interest to quietly ask *themselves* to not attest adblock plugins, web browsers downloaded through alternative app stores, etc etc as “insecure”
@umadoshi @yesterdaychild i havent met them but from what i’ve gathered they’re a particular type of pickup truck bro that does not seem worth it
fortunately they’re not there that often (??) so its tolerable but yeah i feel you on neighbors that smoke
@yesterdaychild @umadoshi the floor below me seems to be under the impression that they can smoke in the bathroom with the extractor fan on but really the bathroom ceilings are even *more* permeable than the rest of the apartment so it just goes right up into mine 😔
@oddtypeofdragon seriously i am glad thats not my life
@inametaphor ah yeah pectin can be tricky haha, i switched brands recently and the new gells wayyyyy less than the old one does which I wasn’t super pleased to discover mid-batch
@inametaphor oooh i love raspberry jam but i almost never end up making it — i hope yours is coming out well?
