@52square@artisan.chat @zkat per the official patreon: «The code of the project is available on GitHub. Besides the development of Mastodon itself, we develop and maintain:
Official Mastodon app for iOS
Official Mastodon app for Android
Mastodon server mastodon.social, currently hosting over 693,000 users
Mastodon server mastodon.online, currently hosting over 93,000 users
joinmastodon.org, the homepage of the project and related APIs
docs.joinmastodon.org, the documentation for the project»
The reason why its mastodon.social and mastodon.online which get money from Mastodon gGmbH and no one else is because the lead developer/guy who runs gGmbH, Eugen, is also the admin of those two instances and he’s never minded playing favorites
@zkat @52square@artisan.chat for the record the fact that the “official” mastodon apps which use the same 3rd party api as every other app, and which make several design choices bad enough that new users are frequently warned to use a different app get money while none of the fantastic apps that have been around years longer than either of the “official” ones have never seen a cent also bothers me for similar reasons. If the patreon was just restricted to docs and the mastodon server software itself that’d be one thing but the current situation is horribly unbalanced
