this is why western games with silent protagonists are trashy power fantasies, because they try to use the model of genres in the west while using structural techniques not designed for them
but anyway blah blah this differs from the expectations of western genre fans because in the west we generally expect the protagonist to have all the interesting stuff happen to them, rather than serve as essentially a structural device for enabling the interesting stories
this isn’t a bad thing necessarily; it’s a way of packaging a lot of subversive content in a container which has mass appeal by making the main narrative / core story something everyone can relate to
this isn’t to say video games are good
as a more serious take i think video games are in a *very* similar place to romance anime where the arc and role of the protagonist is severely limited for morality/respectability/audience expectations reasons and the supporting cast is used for all of the interesting/subversive narratives
we could be having much greater works of literature being written right now but instead in order to even BEGIN doing something interesting you have to fight against a decade‐plus of people telling you there is a Single Right Way of doing things, and most people don’t
95% of writing education is cheap shortcuts to produce something which looks passable most of the time and not an actual education in the language
i think the absolute worst thing about the way writing is taught and understood is the way that people say “you should do this” or “you shouldn’t do that” instead of saying like “when you do this, it has this effect” or “when you do that, it does that” and letting people fucking decide for themselves what they want
i’m like “these sounds are all clear and i can hear them well but there’s a part of my brain going ‘somebody just dropped a piano lmao’ ”
