finished chapter one of five of a rough draft

« the women of the Tucson Feminist Media Collective showed their constellation their summer heatwave by recording themselves frying an egg on the sidewalk, much to the chagrin of a local policeman. »

« International Videoletters was conceived by American, Canadian, and Australian feminist media workers at the New York conference as a solution to feminist communities' feelings of isolation. The feminist press reported factual details of protests and events, but it provided neither the immediacy nor the intimacy feminists craved. Film and video could provide audiences with a more sensory experience of other communities' activities, and, as conference participants with experience working in video production and public access television pointed out, video was quick, easy, and cheap, meaning it could do so with an immediacy that film could not. » it's only gotten quicker, easier, and cheaper (hint, hint)

a number of people have followed me in the past week but they generally don't like my posts

it's okay; i understand; they're an acquired taste—but also: lmao

« Many audience members, lesbian and non-lesbian, found her tale of becoming a cheerleader to spend more time with other girls charming. »

« The dyke audience found Hammer's menstruation film Menses "comic," while the liberals were "horrified" by the blood. »

the opinion of many Americans, whether they are fascists, climate activists, leftists, or antiracists, is that the US Government does not currently have the capacity to enact that alternate future

it is unsurprising that people who work in media would place an outsized importance on the role of rhetoric, but our current crisis is not the result of savvy Republicans using strong language to get votes, but the fact that many Americans do not see a future for themselves in this country, and some segment of them believe that through fascism that state of affairs can be changed

you have to do the work of building for them an alternate future if you want them to take a different stance. simply negating their current position is not enough

political violence is a symptom of a failing democracy, not its cause

« If institutions and individuals do more to make it unacceptable in American public life, organized violence in the service of political objectives can still be pushed to the fringes. » New York Times Editorial Board, it doesn’t matter how “unacceptable” political violence is in American political life if it is the only thing which works

there are finally (a few) leaves on the ground

god just imagine being a lesbian playing the home-recorded cassette tape of another lesbian telling you about her life over and over as you go about your day

« From the start, this bicoastal collective work proved to be less than easy. Not only was long-distance communication challenging, but the women of "Iris West" (Reid, Stevens, and Zheutlin in LA) and "Iris East" (Biren and Farmer in DC) also barely knew one another and had to quickly develop methods of rectifying as much. Long-distance phone calls were expensive and letters were limiting, so the group soon began to supplement these more traditional forms of communication wich audiotapes that they mailed back and forch with their letters. These tapes allowed them to communicate more thoroughly and provided a more personal way to get to know one another. »
