we could be having much greater works of literature being written right now but instead in order to even BEGIN doing something interesting you have to fight against a decade‐plus of people telling you there is a Single Right Way of doing things, and most people don’t
95% of writing education is cheap shortcuts to produce something which looks passable most of the time and not an actual education in the language
i think the absolute worst thing about the way writing is taught and understood is the way that people say “you should do this” or “you shouldn’t do that” instead of saying like “when you do this, it has this effect” or “when you do that, it does that” and letting people fucking decide for themselves what they want
i’m like “these sounds are all clear and i can hear them well but there’s a part of my brain going ‘somebody just dropped a piano lmao’ ”
