« The multitude of character sets leads many vendors to recommend Unicode. »

i submitted an issue to mastodon to deal with this although i’m not optimistic about it actually getting fixed

Show thread

oh, apparently homebrew sets up the initial database cluster that way, thanks homebrew 🙄

Show thread

okay so my local development environment is setting up databases with a locale of `C` despite my environment clearly specifying a `LOCALE` of `en_US.UTF-8` and why the fuck

lemme just check the database configuration for mastodon……

mastodon *says* you should post to Discourse for support instead of Github, but as best as i can tell no mastodon developers actually check the Discourse

pseud support on kibicat mastodon? 🐚 maybe someday

Show thread

my profile kinda makes it look like i’m plural but no i just have a lot of pseuds

but anyway the fact that each unown letter has a corresponding english verb associated with it (via the Unown Report) screams “rune” to me

the name of :Unown_N_NUZZLE: is :Unown_N_NUZZLE::Unown_U_UNDO::Unown_Z_ZOOM::Unown_Z_ZOOM::Unown_L_LAUGH::Unown_E_ENGAGE: for example

Show thread

my understanding as someone who cannot read japanese is that this is a translation error, and the original pokédex entry just calls them “ancient characters” and not hieroglyphs specifically

Show thread

i find it funny that the unown letters are often compared to hieroglyphs when they are much more similar to runes

every time i see my display name this plays in my head

Show thread

one of these days i’m going to let @aescling have the username @æ
