@platypus (anyway this was actually an extremely good fire season out west afaict; it has been much worse in recent years past)
@platypus living in WA, yeah it was particularly bad this past week due to how the wind was blowing (east‐to‐west, which is unusual); it’s cleared up considerably now on account of clean air blowing in from the ocean again (and cooler september temperatures are helping with the fires) but that map was a lot of red and purple not long ago
anyway it’s always the sketchy weirdos who make a fuckton of posts on public that get wide reach and a lot of replies, which is not an amplification pattern i particularly appreciate, fediverse
the answer is almost always thst somebody who is a fine person on another instance replied to them, causing the original post to federate with the reply
i don’t defederate from people just because i don’t like them or think they have issues but there are a fair number of regulars on our federated timeline where i am just like “why are you here”
