U+2026 … HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS is literally just “three dot leader” they just gave it a different name for some reason (western bias)

Show thread

i stand corrected; it looks like U+2024 ․ ONE DOT LEADER and U+2025 ‥ TWO DOT LEADER are indeed intended for this purpose; i had assumed they were technical characters

@Satsuma yes, ‹ 、 ›

in chinese, the above comma is only used for enumeration of items in a list, and ‹ , › is used for commas e.g. between phrases. japanese writing i think can feature both but i don’t think there are as firm of rules in place.

@Satsuma this is actually a bit unconventional for two reasons: (1) japanese ellipses don’t typically use fullwidth periods like that, and (2) typically they are centred on the line rather than placed on the baseline

@Satsuma screenshots from link’s awakening:

1. note the open square at the end of the first line; this is a full stop

2. single‐dot ellipsis

@Satsuma in japanese the period character is ‹ 。 ›, so they can and do use ordinary periods as single dot ellipses

my guess is that it’s “just use periods” but we should also acknowledge that unicode does not have particularly good ellipsis guidelines presently

Show thread

are there unicode guidelines on how to encode a single‐ or double‐dot ellipsis

@witchfynder_finder when ur wife doesn’t agree with ur kinks so u have to write a fantasy novel series to exorcize them

@witchfynder_finder see this is why the lord of the rings was finished before it was published

@witchfynder_finder also wasn’t the wheel created by the creator?? why didn’t the creator just make it differently?? like in a way which wouldn’t require him to totally have his ass beat??

@witchfynder_finder right but what doesn’t make sense to me is why this is what is Fated

if anything you would think the Wheel would be on the side of the Dark One since he’s the one who was unfairly thrown in prison and all

Show thread

> In response to this threat, the Wheel spun out the Dragon, a channeler of immense power, to be a champion for the Light.

why does the Wheel………care??

Show thread

is the Dark One also split in half?? is there an antimale and antifemale?? or is it just the Light One who gets divided into Gender

Show thread

> The One Power is divided into male and female halves, saidin and saidar, which work in opposition and in unison to drive the Wheel.

okay so this is like yin and yang. yin, darkness, passivity, femininity, and yang, light, activity, masculinity. surely they are present in all living things and drive the events of history.

> The Creator imprisoned its antithesis, "Shai'tan," the Dark One, at the moment of creation, sealing him away from the Wheel.

okay hold up
