i cannot overstate how completely unaroused i am by this author’s writing style
the problem with reading poorly-written smut is i just want to write it better

that point when talking to someone where they go “wait, your life is kind of fucked up, actually”
when it turns out the fix is very simple

@MerlinJStar@weirder.earth (if i wanted to answer your question focusing on the most essential aspect: CWs were for kink communities to ensure that engagement with their content was safe, sane, and consensual. early mastodon had a lot of people into hypnosis, noncon, forcefem, etc kinds of content and that's not something you just post without a CW.
but the other thing i would stress is that they came about in the first few months of the Trump presidency when a lot of people were feeling very burned out)

@MerlinJStar@weirder.earth CWs were originally implemented as a more accessible alternative to ROT13, which had wide adoption on the early fediverse (late 2016 and early 2017)
ROT13 was in active use by the community at the time of introduction for lewd posts, to hide spoilers for media, and when discussing current events
@aescling it was kittyposting lol
