@nightpool@cybre.space or anything they boost, but yes, this is a fair point
i mean i think the critical issue here is that i support some government institutions and not others haha
not every organization funded or organized by a government loves cops, but if they are hosted on a government instance you kind of need to preemptively assume that they do. this forces an "all feds or no feds" moderation approach which i feel like could make things more difficult for people who actually have to work with federal organizations that aren't awful
i'm not saying the answer to this is having them set up an account on just any random server, btw, but i think there may be a compromise position here
@nightpool@cybre.space i think it's reasonable to want oversight before a government is able to read every post an instance has received regardless of visibility's setting
personally i would not knowingly federate with any government-run fediverse instance that had jurisdiction over my users for this reason, which means the only way a government account would EVER be able to reach us would be if it was on an instance whose administration i trusted to not allow that
i also find this hilarious because the worst case scenario is the fediverse becomes what it was a month ago when the rest of you were all on twitter
@darius but on the other hand, i would feel a lot safer interacting with a government account if i knew it didn't have immediate database access
even if it is supported in your instance, it may not be supported in apps, etc…
so like, chill; we’re the ones in control
this isn't iOS where new updates get downloaded and applied while you sleep and suddenly everything is different
it takes YEARS for any new feature to become widespread on the fediverse
i’ve seen a number of new admins asking for advice on when to block over the past few weeks
ordinarily i do not reply to these posts because my approach to moderation is pretty different from typical mastodon culture so i feel like it might send a wrong signal about what to generally expect from admins
but maybe i should try to put together a page for it so people can see
today feels like a good day for a reminder that even though the community of mastodon instances are often touted as a kind of anarchism which works, a stance which i mostly agree with:
most mastodon admins and mod teams have not had any kind of training in anarchist antiviolent community interventions. we’re actually really bad at settling our differences and getting along
Administrator / Public Relations for GlitchCat. Not actually glitchy, nor a cat. I wrote the rules for this instance.
