all a URL is is a mechanism for encoding an identifier that every system can understand

how identifiers are assigned? not specified by URL
what that identifier means? not specified by URL
how to resolve that identifier? not specified (or guaranteed) by URL

it is both amazing and a real problem how many people think that URLs are somehow both more and less than this

the only thing URLs get you is a universally-understood syntax with defined semantics

@coriander thanks

it's a hot day for a
TIG welding

i would also ram an asteroid but they never reply to my posts on Lex

one day i will probably pronounce “Cofagrigus” correctly the first time

@noelle i love how ’ve is used more broadly in british as opposed to american english

in american english it typically only stands for have-the-helper-verb, not have-the-possessive, like “I’ve got five pennies”

but in british english you can just say “I’ve five pennies” it's great

@lapis @coriander i mean that's what i'm saying though, text censorship is the original censorship, it's always been technologically trivial to search text for "bad" words

so using bad or obscure euphemisms is already an ingrained part of fandom culture; people would adapt to it on tumblr pretty easily i feel

sidenote: i imagine historians in the future will really resent the early 2000’s for making them keep running lists of site-specific words and phrases used to get around censorship blocks lmao

@coriander i think it's so good i want it yearround

@coriander @lapis i mean this is where terms like "lemons" come from right?

@aescling i mean, very few people are truly “non-disabled” but i think there's two schools of thought regarding that

⚠️ attention computer touchers

@chemelia a mathematical function is a map from an input (the arguments) to an output (the return value); it's a transformation

functional programming is programming that uses these transformations to complete tasks, like "given this blob of data, give me a webpage"

because a significant amount of programming is mapping data from one form to another, this is a useful programming style to know

« Both sides, still, were consumed with fiery love for her, the princess. My princess. My obsession for her, even now, was troubling. » is Link supposed to sound like Isildur here

i guess they still use “Japanese” as a noun in Canada

« Just this week, one of the party’s top leaders was caught giving a fascist salute and one of its candidates was suspended for flatteringly comparing Ms. Meloni with Hitler. In the past, members have held a dinner celebrating the March on Rome that brought Mussolini to power 100 years ago.

Ms. Meloni has tried to distance herself from what she calls those “nostalgic” elements of her party » swell
