beyond that i think the exclusivity of the limited audience leads to a strengthening of the parasocial aspects like

yes you are learning things about a person that not everybody knows but that still doesn't mean you like, know them at all as a person, and it especially doesn't mean they know you

Show thread

yes there is still the hypothetical problem of “status updates for a limited audience” but in practice i don't find that to be that pressing; just send an email or chat message if you need someone to know you're doing something but don't want the whole world to know

Show thread

what i mean though is i don't actually like social media that much for having actual conversations, and for status updates you can get away with something much simpler

Show thread

honestly for what i use social media for it could probably be handled with some shell scripts and a public atom feed

@Canageek@cybre.space there is also shapecatcher.com/ if you prefer drawing, but there are so many unicode lookalikes that it can be difficult (for example i got "circled crossing lanes" and "circle with superimposed x", which are not the correct characters in this case)

if all else fails you can try just browsing the mathematical symbols and operators block but i find a text search with a good guess works ~85% of the time

@Canageek@cybre.space for future reference, i typically use r12a.github.io/uniview/ to get the unicode character corresponding to a given symbol (type a guess for a word which might be in the name, like "times", into the search box and click "text")

if you know the LaTeX there are probably sites which have those mappings as well, although i'm not so familiar with them

once you have the character in unicode, pasting it into wiktionary or wikipedia can be a great resource
