What do a Cougar fan and a Husky fan have in common?

@witchfynder_finder Neither of them went to UW! 🎉

@witchfynder_finder WSU fans are very devoted but UW fans are complete trash

@witchfynder_finder meanwhile if you want to computers your best option is to find people who build bridges which don’t fail and work for them

@witchfynder_finder computers are much much more a trade skill than college makes them out to be, and unlike Actual Engineering, they do not have classes at university which teach you the practical or ethical skills you will need so really your only option is to learn them in the field

as someone who computers, do i love this situation? no, i would rather colleges implement practical classes akin to physical engineering’s “how not to kill people when building a bridge” kind of coursework. but these classes are not what $$$ employers want, so it will take a significant number of bridges failing before that happens

@witchfynder_finder i think the absolute last thing anyone should do is go to college and learn computers and this isn’t even a controversial opinion among people who do computers

my reason for switching around alphabetic characters is largely not for the purpose of typing ergonomics for alphabetic characters, it’s making the higher levels of the keyboard layout make sense

i think it actually makes more sense to swap Y and F; a lot of words end in ‐ny or ‐ey and it’s nice to have them on different hands

I've been writing and running a little Rails forum for about a month now for some friends!

I think I still have a little bit to go for a 1.0 for the software (mainly pagination, our forum is too small to require it yet) but think it's in a place where I can recommend it to others if you're interested in shaping development.

if you're interested in running a little forum for your friends or an existing community, check it out (and let me know so I start versioning!): github.com/hartsick/ruBB

somehow people never make that leap though they just want the private organizations to do good for everybody out of some sense of personal justice or idek

a state-owned institution, funded by the people and acting on their behalf and in their interests, has moral, legal, and political responsibilities to meet their needs.

a private organization doesn’t. a private organization certainly doesn’t have an obligation to meet the needs of EVERY person. they can just pick a subset.

if all the private organizations are picking subsets which don’t include you, that’s a strong argument for state ownership.

sometimes the way people talk about companies is as if they think companies should be owned by the state

sometimes these people are even anarchists

yesterday for work i literally copy pasted the XSLT that generates the index pages of www.u2764.com and slapped an MIT license on it and stuck it in a work repository

@noelle « Though, in reviewing the incidents of my administration, I am unconscious of intentional error, I am nevertheless too sensible of my defects not to think it probable that I may have committed many errors. Whatever they may be, I fervently beseech the Almighty to avert or mitigate the evils to which they may tend. I shall also carry with me the hope, that my Country will never cease to view them with indulgence; and that, after forty-five years of my life dedicated to its service with an upright zeal, the faults of incompetent abilities will be consigned to oblivion, as myself must soon be to the mansions of rest. »
