« Why focus on the extremes, rather than on the area of overlap where women and men exhibit similar kinds of variation? The existence of gendered styles must be explicitly demonstrated in order to put to rest the myth that gender is invisible on computer networks. This myth not only misrepresents the reality of gender on-line, but further perpetuates the uncritical tolerance of practices (such as flaming) which discourage women from using computer networks (Herring 1992, 1993a). Such practices affect large numbers of users even when only a minority of men are responsible, and thus it behooves those concerned with gender equality in cyberspace to understand them well. »

@djsundog also you're gonna be driving through Kibitown here pretty shortly (maybe already have by the time you see this??)

@djsundog too bad it's winter and covid; lotta good concerts at the Gorge in George

celebrate his conception, celebrate the revealing of his divine nature to the world, recognize his trials, remember his death, these all make sense to me

the day he popped out of his mother’s womb?? why?? he didn’t do anything important that day

i’m not a birthday person in general and i’m definitely not a birthday person for famous historical people who lived way before my time, e.g. Christ

@Satsuma i wonder if that is common and whether the LDS church like, even cares, since i don't think they have much of a Marian theology?

@Satsuma oookay so after doing more research Mormons believe God the Father has a wife, and some believe that the spirits of humans are their literal children, as a result of fucking, and that Jesus was God’s firstborn through this method

however the Heavenly Mother is not Mary, who, presumably, would also be a child of God

@Satsuma yeah the mormon encyclopedia cites both the bible and mormon prophets identifying Mary as a virgin (the latter are presumably less ambiguous)

i don’t think it’s really a theological focus though

The Rise of Kyoshi

« Jianzhu had once implemented a policy that any member of the staff, no matter how lowly, could talk to him personally about any household concern. Kyoshi saw the gesture of kindness devolve into some of the servants ratting each other out over minor grievances, hoping to curry favor. She knew now that had been his intent all along. »

one thing which is very interesting about all of these articles talking about computer geek culture is that none of them are calling it gay, despite it being frequently characterized as both a failed masculinity and a disavowal of heterosexual reproductive norms

you better not fucking misread Butler (1990) friend i’m warning you

when the article cites Butler (1990) and your critical reading levels go ⤴︎⤴︎⤴︎

right now it just displays a random quote but pretty soon it will also have a calendar…

@aescling yeah nobody does but that's partially because there aren't any homepages to USE anymore

how long before someone sets my personal website as their homepage

@Satsuma it’s not uncommon for people to think this; the bible mentions “brothers of jesus” and some people interpret this as biological brothers via Mary and Joseph (although Catholics do not)

@Satsuma the mormon line seems to be that mary was a virgin at time of birthing jesus but not a virgin perpetually

@Satsuma look i’m not particularly strong on the whole “virgin mary” thing but for the record i do NOT think this qualifies

@aescling as someone who has studied higher math, it is a failure of both

it is true that if you understand math as axiomatic and understand that the axioms you choose determine the possibilities of the system, a whole world of nuance opens up

but mathematics is still characterized—perhaps solely characterized—by its persistent divorcement of those axioms from any significatory power beyond their mere logical outcomes

anything else is, at the very best, “applied”
