thinking i might DNF this YA novel it's simply not that good…

@witchfynder_finder i mean you’re not exactly wrong but on the other hand historically west coast games are extremely close; my guess is that the rams will have more Big Plays and it’ll come down to whether the seahawks can hold them to field goals and get touchdowns on their own possessions

it came up in the unicode document register again so this is your annual reminder to nerds that the reason why Unicode hasn’t encoded Klingon is because they don’t want to get sued

i think i’m supposed to empathize with this young protagonist who is being told she is overambitious but no she absolutely is being overambitious

learning about gentrification is good but not from a YA book

Show thread

oh no this book is trying to educate me about gentrification

remember in pokémon how the first game had a lot of mystery associated with it and there were a lot of rumours and things which didn’t necessarily actually exist but caught on in the cultural context in a big enough way that they might have well have existed

and then like 3 games later all the people who were originally a part of that were out there steadfastly bashing every other pokémon game

@witchfynder_finder and like i participate in fandom!! i write things!! i get loving all that stuff!!

but it’s also extra, like, your first priority as an artist is always to make a good art. if you don’t make a good art nobody will care about your extended cut. like imagine somebody asking for an extended cut of justice league

(this is a joke)

@witchfynder_finder like i think afterwards you should definitely go watch the director’s cut because it’s a better movie but like, you kinda have to already know what is going on or it just won’t land

@witchfynder_finder my hot blade runner take is that the bad voiceover version is actually the best version to watch if it’s your first time watching blade runner, the producers were right, the movie is fuckin impenetrable on first watch otherwise

@witchfynder_finder like i think the theatrical version is The Version of Lord of the Rings; the extended version is like, “okay but we’re all really big Lord of the Rings nerds so we really just had to shoot some of this extra stuff”

@witchfynder_finder but the important thing is that you have to actually *design* for the shorter version and making it make sense on its own, it can’t just be the longer version with bits chopped out

@witchfynder_finder and like games do this sometimes with difficulty settings or making gameplay aspects optional but i think it would be interesting if they did that in ways which did not have any gameplay consequence whatsoever; like instead of [skip cutscene] and [view cutscene] having like, “press Y for segment with expanded lore”

@witchfynder_finder honestly i wish more things did multiple cuts like sometimes you want to dive really deep into things and sometimes you want a nice story which is easy to wrap your head around

@witchfynder_finder i definitely should i just never had access to them growing up which is when i was liable to watch the lord of the rings, we only ever had the theatrical cuts on DVD

@witchfynder_finder i’ve listened to the extended soundtracks though

but i wouldn’t say that they’re necessarily better than the ordinary soundtracks, each has its own strengths

@witchfynder_finder i have lots of opinions about the lord of the rings movies and still haven’t seen the extended cuts tbh
