@witchfynder_finder the very last thing any proper white english person wants to do is think critically about actual english culture
tell us more about the funny words in german, please
@witchfynder_finder it’s part of the white project of making english fade into the background imo; if you point out english’s notable aspects then you’re situating it historically within a culture instead of just accepting it as an unspoken norm
it’s not as overt as the people who said that it was fine that latin was a dead language because it had already attained perfection, but it’s the same sort of thing i think; exotification of the other for the purpose of normalizing the same
@witchfynder_finder see i just find that sad though because the best way to love the english language is to appreciate its unique aspects
and these lists are just like “here is why every other language is more unique and special than yours”
@witchfynder_finder my two favourite things about lists of untranslatable words is that (a) some of the words don’t NEED to be translated, because we’ve just adopted them directly instead, and (b) they never include words from English, despite us having some great candidates, like “spooky” or “angst”
just post the literal things, there’s a ton and you don’t need to fake them
sometimes i don’t understand bots, like, why would you markov that, the source is way more interesting
this is right up with there with “hope i haven’t used gosh or jeez” because there isn’t christianity in pokémon
i can’t ⁜really⁜ get mad at Galar fics given its treatment in the anime but even so, sometimes repeated overt americanisms just get grating
i generally don’t worry too much about dialect because mine is strange in any environment, but there are some words which just seem out‐of‐place imo
you ever have those moments of like ‘oh no, i sure hope i haven’t used the word “mad” in my fanfiction with the american meaning; it should be “angry” or “upset” ’

sometimes people say things like it is supposed to be baffling but i am not at all baffled
otherwise most of these are unfamiliar names to me; i should poke around and give them a listen
glad to see Wolf Alice was on the shortlist and didn’t win; Blue Weekend is good but it isn’t ⁜that⁜ good
oh the Mercury Prize happened
it’s awkward though because like, it’s not just going to go away? everybody in galar expects it now. there would be a huge uproar if the pokémon league was like, “nah we’re banning dynamax”
dynamax battling is a very recent and unnatural addition to the sport promoted entirely because it makes for good T·V; there is very little to suggest that it is actually like, good or healthy for the pokémon involved
