@alpine_thistle semi-relatedly, i’m planning on reading Pauli Murray’s autobio & I saw that she’d been added to the Episcopalian Lesser Feasts & Fasts calendar for July 1. Which feels like an excellent way to close out the pride season
@moonspider @kiesa couple more:
- local only posting (aka posts that dont federate off your server)
- media upload limits (some instances let you post larger videos than others)
- being able to use html &/or markdown to style your posts
- whether tags are inline or a separate field
- how the instance renders different post types (for example vanilla mastodon typically displays blog posts as a subject line+link, but some instances have modified this to show the whole thing in app if available, meanwhile i believe bookwyrm drops any post that doesn’t have a book attached & also isn’t a reply)
- whether the instance shows trending hashtags, posts, or links (secondarily if & how instance admins curate said things but thats social not a code difference)
- if you’re a webuser, what the frontend looks like—some instances have modified theirs heavily, others have just done some CSS color tweaks, and many leave it completely unaltered
@noracodes nice shot! Robins are such adorable birds
@platypus i see you’ve already gotten a few recs for 3M Aura’s as one of the better options for disposable N95’s & they’re what I’ve been using these last two semesters as well to fairly good success
i will note that they’re a bit on the larger size though—its less problematic for accordion fold masks like Auras than for duckbills where having the wrong size will completely ruin the seal but if you generally have issues with masks running large that’ll probably apply here as well
@pomological if you like alarmingly pink applesauce, these are delicious for that
Things that still aren't included:
- Individual people's rec blogs
- DW/LJ comment fic communities like kinkmemes or fic_promptly (though I'd love it if someone put together a current directory of some sort for these)
My last post on finding & sharing fic outside of Ao3 ( https://satsuma.dreamwidth.org/26683.html ) has been updated with all the links people sent me! If there are still things missing, please do continue passing them along
@yesterdaychild worlds greatest tragedy 😭
@pixouls my mother got me store-bought cookies for my birthday specifically bc she knew i’d want to reuse the tin 😆
@moonspider eye contact might be the reason for warning, but that doesn’t mean its not helpful to know what the context its happening in is, right? like, saying its a selfie gives you a fairly clear idea of what you’ll get when you open the CW
consider that selfies, mugshots, photos of celebrities, and an artsy macro shot of someones eye could all be warned as “eye contact”—one might, for example, be fine with looking at selfies posted by your friends because you know them but not the other three!
@randomColorContrasts what makes it double do u think
@moonspider a couple things:
traditional content warnings aren’t about offensiveness, but the fact that a topic might be upsetting for some people. Sometimes a topic is both (eg. homophobia) but bugs and medical needles are two frequently warned for things where i think it is fairly clear the warning is not any kind of moral/cultural judgement or indication of offensiveness
fedi in particular—especially pre-Musk buying twitter fedi—has a culture of using CWs for an even wider variety of things from including collapsing long posts or threads, spoiler warnings for shows, hiding the punchline of a joke, etc. You might argue this means the feature should be renamed but regardless the fact is there is very little association between using a CW and indicating something is distasteful or offensive
As for selfies in particular, its a curtesy towards people who are startled by unexpected eye contact, which is why often the CWs in question are phrases like “selfie, eye contact” or “selfie but no ec”
@enchantedsleeper @Lady #DIYFandom is indeed quite catchy!
